Need to know what a spyder is? It has to do with seals ?

Need to know what a spyder is? It has to do with seals ?
Some guy was saying something about a spyder is neccesary some times to hold the front main seal on the transmission? I do not know anything about this so could somebody help me out.

its a little metal plate with 4 clips. mine had one on there, some people leave em off but i wouldn't.
