SS Exhaust Differences

Know it's been asked a million times, but couldn't find it when I searched. Can someone tell me the exact difference between the exhaust system on the SS vs. a regular Z-28? I know the SS is supposed to be less restrictive and worth around 10 more HP, but what are the specs that make it flow better?

Thanks,
Dave

The base SS exhaust just has a freer flowing muffler, and different tips. Whereas the optionl Dual/Dual, is a completely new exhaust. It has a 3" intermediate pipe, the free flowing muffler, and bigger tailpipes. http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

Yep, Unbelievable's got it right. The optional SLP stainless exhaust, is available in dual/duals, or as 2 rectangular shaped tips, in the center of an add on, they put on the rear bumper. The center mount is only a cosmetic mod. They both give a 10 hp boost, over the staock SS exhaust.

Check with others on here. Some are running other aftermarket exhausts, they like beter. I got the SLP version, just because it could be ordered that way and may add value,,,,way down the road. Who knows, just my choice.

Good luck
Mark

Are the pipes larger diameter on an SS vs. a Z-28, or is it just a less restrictive muffler on the SS?

From what I have seen, the Z28 is 2.5" pipe, the SS is 2.75", and most aftermarket are 3" to 4"

The standard SS is 2.75", whereas the optional exhaust for the SS is 3". http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

The stock Z28 pipe is 2.75 inches not 2.5.

OK, here we go again. Who's right? Is it 2.5 or 2.75 on the Z-28?

I fairly certain the the Z is 2.5" and the SS is 2.75". I swapped my stocker for an SS with a cut out.

I have heard on many occasions that stock Z is 2.5" I'm just too lazy to go measure, LOL

I just so happened to have my stock Z28 exhaust sitting in my garage on the floor right now, so I figured I would chime in... it's definately a 2.75 inch i-pipe. Just took a ruler out there and measured the diameter. Hope this helps. :-D

That definately makes sense considering the SS exhaust was an exact fit to my Z28 Y. I must have been thinking about the muffler outlet pipes.

Thanks, JD. I was getting ready to take a tape measure and do the calculations.

So I did anyway! Here's what I measured on a stock '02 Z-28: (Outer diameters only, slightlyless for I.D.)

From y-pipe to muffler-- 8.8 inches o.d. divided by pi = 2.8 inches diameter.

From muffler to tips-- 7.0 inches o.d. divided by pi = 2.2 inches diameter.

So it seems the stock Z-28 exhaust is 2.75" from the y-pipe to muffler, and from muffler to tips 2" diameter. SS is probably 2.75 and 2.5 respectively with a freere-flowing muffler.

Thanks to all who contributed,
Dave
