Will these fit?

One of my friends wants to get drag radials for his SS. He could get Nitto 275's but really wants the 315's. Will the 315's fit or are they just barely too big?

they are gonna be too big for the stock rims the biggest he can go are the 275.

Actually he's considering getting new rims anyways. So rim aside, what is the biggest you can shove back there? I look at the archived articles so I wouldn't have to ask this. The answer isn't that specific.

I know on an 11" rim you can fit 315's on an F-Body, but I wouldn't put 315's on a 9" or 9.5" rim. I have seen pictures of an F-Body with 335's on the back, but I'm sure something had to be modified to cram those things in there.

My Friend has 315's on a ws6 rim and they are 9.5. He says they fit perfectly, little rubbing in turns though.

I saw an SS, a couple weeks ago, with Nitto P315's on the rear, mounted on the SLP 5 spoke, chrome rims, you could get for the SS, when you ordered it. I talked to the guy and he said, he got different opinions, if they'd work or not, but finally decided to try them. They fit. It took a little jimmying to get them on. Other than that, they work fine for him. He had Nitto P275's, on the rear, before that.

I asked him if he noticed any improved traction. He said, no, he just liked how they looked better. The P275, Nitto Dr's, hooked just as well.

I was advised to stay as close to factory tire size, when putting on a set of DR's. I was told, in cases, going with a wider tire, after a point, does nothing to increase traction. At speed, tires balloon out a bit and a wider tire can actually impede your times a little, creating drag and something else, that I don't recall.

So, all that considered, I went with a set of Nitto P275's. I just put them on yesterday. Ohhhh...Yeah!!! What a difference. I'm going to the track today and see how much my times improve.

Good Luck,
Mark

You should be able to fit a 315/35/17 on the back with a 9 - 9 1/2 wheel. As per the tire guides you not do it, I seen it done on many Camaros and T/As.

yes I've seen it done as well...but definitely wouldn't recommend putting 315's on anything less than 10.5" (preferably on 11's). To put 335's back there you're going to have to do some tubbing.

I've worked in the tire industry for 29 years. I would never put a 315 on a rim less than 10" wide. I run Nitto 315/35R17s on the back of my SS on 17"x11" rims with a 1/4" spacer. Barely fits and looks awesome.
