guionM 06-06-2003, 12:00 PM When I went to the LA show, I mentioned that the GTO had duals exiting from the same side (not a single exhaust).
Here's a complete picture of GTO's dual exhaust system. It's actually less restrictive than the F-body's single exhaust system (don't think the irony of single exhaust Z28 owners complaining about the dual exhaust GTO's "single" exhaust is lost here :))
Also note, it has resonatators not mufflers. Should sound really sweet! :D

Chris 96 WS6 06-06-2003, 12:38 PM Looks like it also has full sized cat converters plus "pup" cats up near the manifolds, like the pre-02 Z06s had.
Seems like that would be unnecessary since the F-body never had pups and the Vette got rid of the ones it had.
I'm just happy to see a true dual exhaust on a non-Vette GM product again. I would love to see what an X-pipe would do for the HP.
Doug Harden 06-06-2003, 01:24 PM .....the "bolt-in" IRS assy......hmmm the street rodder in me is thinking about re-tro fitment.....interesting geometry back there too....
Front suspension arms look small......and curious geometry there too...
Also the car should be fairly easy to design sub-frame connectors for......
Nice to see the underbody fairings to cover the gas tank, etc....and even one in front of the oil pan....
Headers should be OK too!....Tail pipes look tiny! Funny little cross-over near the back....
315's might not fit in back.....gggrrrrr...
Rear steer rack & pinion...hhhmmmmm.....
Jacking points seem to be 1/2 way under the doors....lifting entire side at a time...?!?
Just my little observations......:D
guionM 06-06-2003, 01:26 PM I believe there are new emission standards comming that require instant converter startups, meaning everyone's catalytic converters will be mounted as close to the manifolds as possible.
number77 06-06-2003, 01:54 PM look at how close they are, you could just make an H-pipe out of hack-saw and a 5-inch piece of pipe

Then perhaps they were limited with too little space for the full sized cats. The Vette's 'real' cats (and fbody's as well) bolt literally right up to the manifolds.
99SilverSS 06-06-2003, 03:46 PM Well it isn't the fact that the exhaust is true duals that dissapoints many its the fact that the GTO doesn't have the pipes on sperates on either side of the car. It was important enough a look for the F-body that they branched off a dual exit exhaust tip to make the car more agressive. Now here is a car with true duals and they exit on the same side... the Grand Prix's exhaust looks better...
Typical GM 2 steps forward (sometimes) 1 step back (always)
Sixer-Bird 06-06-2003, 04:48 PM I don't care if the exhaust pipes come out the top of the car, as long as its a true dual setup and it looks nice on outside, I'm happy.
guess who 06-06-2003, 04:49 PM I'd love to see the specs on those muffle-I mean resonators.

I'm happy with this compromise. Don't get me wrong, I would be happier with a symetrical tail end, but at least for the GTO, we get a less appealing rear, with that 'true' stereo sound. :D
Better to sound the part, than continue the poser-dual look we've lived with for all these years. Besides, when the GTO arrives, hopefully the only ones who will be in position to debate the rear styling be the losers (at the track, on the street...).
All kidding aside though, I thought it just wasn't feasible to add true duals to the current design in the time for 2004 release? Moving the gas tank, which I thought sounded easy, was apparently a major issue leaving little room for the dream exhaust setup (Which the Monaro, unfortunately, didn't have anyway).
guionM 06-06-2003, 04:56 PM I almost forgot something that might intrest those of you wanting duals on each side of the car.
HSV (which will have parts available here almost from GTO's introduction) has a rear bumper designed for just that set-up. There is a lot of space back there now that the fuel tank's been moved.
Seem like it would be easy to change, but I kind of like the idea of whipping other cars with what seems to be a single twin tip exhaust system. :D

Wheres the link that says it WILL have resonators........

I don't suppose I should mention the SS with the single exhaust outlet on the left side....
OH NO! Too late! I said it!
If its an LS1 is still probably won't sound good. ;) :D They NEED the tailpipes on both sides and they NEED to do it before the car comes out.
1990 Turbo Grand Prix 06-06-2003, 05:55 PM They NEED the tailpipes on both sides and they NEED to do it before the car comes out.
I agree. Of all the things to make as a heritage cue, it was a V8 and true duals on both sides. Gotta wonder why half a$$ attempts are made when the good stuff is on the shelf (HSV).

How about a twin splitter tip?
Definetly. They don't know what heritage cues are anymore. ;) 1 quick look at the hood will tell you that. Or the entire car.
Chris 96 WS6 06-06-2003, 09:48 PM It is clear to me the GTO is nothing but a stopgap to fill the 2+2 V8 sport coupe segment for GM until something is done to replace it.
It looks nothing like any other pontiac except the grille. They know this but since it is a rush to market rebadged Holden then there is not much they can do about it. I'm sure the next GTO will be much more Pontiac-ish and have some heritage cues.
Ude-lose 06-06-2003, 11:33 PM you guys are so lucky they moved the fuel tank , dual tips will be a breeze to install.

Burmite 06-07-2003, 03:11 AM Now why that couldn't be put onto the car will keep me wondering. It's a really simple set up and exhaust isn't the hardest thing to develop for a car. I thought they'd be able to rush and create a set-up like that for the GTO in no time with a moved fuel tank.
I'll tell you why, because that would be the right thing to do, and we can't have that now can we?! Same goes for the hood, I mean there is still months to go.
What's up with the differential cover? It's all pointy.
Caps94ZODG 06-07-2003, 08:34 AM maybee the true dual on either side will be for the rumored SLP Judge??? could be? ?

Seems you are in the minority. Most everyone else seems to think it looks like a Grand Prix or Grand Am. ;)
Ude-lose 06-07-2003, 12:37 PM the new GTO better list price at very low 30s.. here is why-
The Monaro has climate control - the GTO doesnt.
The show car has 18's - the production car has 17"
the show car has headers - the prod car has cast manifold
the show car has grooved rotors with gto emblems on the caliper - the prod car (doubt it)
the show car has an M12(6 speed box) - the prod. car has regular M6.
im especially pissed off about the box..
StreamlineZ28 06-07-2003, 02:57 PM pretty swet that they are putting a true dual setup on the car but i dont like how it comes out one side. why couldnt they put that one the camaro whenwe had it:(

 It is absolutely unthinkable that the car wont come with pipes like this. One on each side of the car would be fine.
