Question 3M 39009 vs. Z6?

Can't find the 3M stuff anywhere locally, even at Pep Boys, so may settle for the Z6. Anyone tried both products? TIA.

Thats really comparing apples and oranges. 3M-39909 is a light abrasive designed to remove scratches and swirls. Z6 is a gloss-enhancing spray. Perhaps you meant Z5, the swirl mark reducer? If so, I've used Z5 with great success on light scratches. But I've never used the 3M stuff. Even so, I have seen it at Pep Boys and Napa.

Ooops, the comparison should read 3M 39009 vs. Z5.

Still apples and oranges,

3M 39009, abrasive polishing compound, to remove scratches (and paint) and to leave no protective coating on the car

Z-5, synthetic paint protector, totally non-abrasive, fill scratches instead of removing paint, will leave a protective layer on the paint.

You can also get 3M products at any store that supplies body shops.

Question

Thanks for the link!

Kevin,

Read all about the 3M Swirl Mark Remover by searching/reading past threads, but still have a few questions. If the finish on the rest of the car is brilliant, will the 3M polish dull the paint like coventional paste abrasive compounds like Turtle Wax?

While it's difficult to guage w/o pictures, which would work more effectively for moderate swirls?

I'm not Kevin, but I have some input.

The 3M did not dull the finish on my Cadillac's white hood after using it. Although, I promptly washed it off with Simple Green, then put a new layer of Z1/Z5 afterwards, which really added to the shine.

To answer your question, on my white hood, the 3M did not dull the paint. It made it brilliant, in fact!

Question

How about a dark paint (Polo Green)?

Nope, 39009 will not dull when used properly (best used with a foam pad and orbital buffer), it is a perfect next step for Z-1 and Z-5.

Get a small orbital buffer w/foam pad if you dont have one. The 3M stuff is a bit labor intensive so you'll wear yourself out doing the whole car by hand.

Basically you apply a few drops of the compound per square ft. then work it with the buffer till it almost disappears. Eventually it'll dry completely and leave a slightly dull residue behind. Just wipe that off and move on to the next section.

I have the same color car as you and the 3M stuff worked quite well. It gave the paint a very smooth finish and a nice shine. Just remember to wash the car when you're done and to apply some form of wax/polish soon. The 3M stuff will strip the paint bare so you'll be without protection till you rewax/polish it.

Good Luck!
