Lightbulb "Guess-timates" on 1/4 mile times with 3.73's?

I know we all hate these threads asking "what do you think it'll do??", but I'll make it quick:

LAST YEAR I ran 14.008 @ 102.99 with 2.101 60'. I know that's slow compared to a lot of LS1's, but I've got an A4 with 2.73's, and the car was stock except for the lid. NOW, when I install the 3.73's with the HPP3 (so I can adjust the shift points) how much improvement should I see?? Would ~13.5 be unreasonable??

Gimme your opinions guys. THX.

that 14 sec time is killing you....if u do run 13.5 its not all because of the gears.....im guessing gears will take off .2 seconds in the quarter....possibly .3 and MAYBE .4

.5 is a lil unreasonable in my opinion

let us know good luck

My plan is to run the car at least once more before I change the gears (within the next month) so I've got a baseline for this year, then change the gears and run, and see what difference it makes. I may also get my car dyno'd at some point to see what the rwhp is..............maybe that'll explain my 14?!

LMAO! that would suck dude, but i doubt that's the case

actually, you should get dynoed to see what kind of numbers you're pushing, that way you'd be able to tell if it's your crappy fo0k'n gears, the car, or if it's you. i doubt its you though cuz your car's an A4, but when you dyno, you'll find out for sure. and don't kid yourself with the dyno, go all out and find yourself a mustang dyno so you can know your TRUE numbers, cuz with those ET's, true numbers are what you need to figure out what's wrong with your car. Dynojets tend to give you a higher number than what you really are. but if it's the gears, then for sure you'd be pushing mid 13's in the car w/ some programming, good luck

Wink

I don't think they'll be too much gear..........I hope anyway!! I've already got them! I know that with my '81, I went from the original 2.56's upto 3.42's and it was a "night & day" difference, but I loved them. I think I'll be happy with the 3.73's, and especially since I've got over-drive with this car. One day I may get a TC as well, but for now I want the gears.

Anyway, keep the feedback coming...............I'm curious what other peoples' experience with 3.73's is.

Sorry man but I think you maybe have the slowest 02 LS1 ever! Aside from horrible M6 drivers. j/k What is your elevation?

About the gears, it should feel much faster.

I know............it does seem slow compared to most. I'm not sure about the exact elevation --- the track is a couple hours from my house, but I have a feeling it may be around 300' - 400' above sea level ('cause I know we're around 250' - 300' here).

My "excuse" is that when I went to the track, the 1st time, it drizzled for a few minutes, and a lot of Civics were driving through the water box, so the track was pretty slick (60' times were 2.1's to 2.3's). The 2nd time it was close to 90 degrees and very humid, so I don't think that helped either (but that's when I got my best run).

Aside from the obvious additional "wear" on my car due to the gears, I know I'm gonna like them. I loved the lower gears in my '81. Now I just gotta get Dad to help me install them!!!

I am just giving you a hard time. 14.0 is still fast. 2.73s are killing you though. If it was 90 and humid and you had your best run then, I would think with cooler air and less humidity you would probably hit a 13.7 or so, then with 3.73s possibly a 13.3 or 13.2 Since LS1s are better in the upper RPMs it will get you in the power range alot quicker.

Get that thing on a dyno too.

Hey man..you've got to keep the gas pedal floored all the way through the 1/4 next time. That's the key!

I've heard that a 2.73/loose converter combo is killer. But you've already got the 3.73 gears.

I got .4 going from 2.73 to 3.73, but I also added hooker shorty headers at the same time, but they say the headers don't add much. So I would say I got 2-3 tenths from the gears.

jamesz24, that's exactly what I've been wanting to see........real numbers!! So you're saying between the gears and Hooker shorties, you shaved .4 seconds off your time? That's not bad then. I also agree that I don't think shorties will do a whole lot for an LS1, since the factory manifolds are actually shaped somewhat like a shorty header.

Anyway, I'm appreciating all the feedback. ChrisLS1Bird, don't worry.......next time I go to the track I'll try to remember to keep the pedal on the floor the whole time! And TransAmLS1, I work right down the road from Agostino's (A.R.E.) and they have a chassis dyno there, so I think one day I'm going to have them dyno my car for me.

Well, any more experience with 3.73's would be great. THX so far.

Definete maybe!

I think you could pull a 13.5 w/3.73's w/2.0 60'. Some cars respond better then others. Never know. Plus, you have more mileage now and the weather might have cost you .2 on that 14.0 run you had.

What really matters is that your car probably feels like it'd pull a freight train compared to what it used to

glad to see I'm not the only one with an LS1 slowmaro.

I ran 14.0x all stock and then 13.9 with lid and filter with a 2.0 60' and NO wheel spin

This is on a convertible too...so I have that extra weight to contend with.

I have been debating gears as well, and 3.73 looks to be my target. I would go with a converter, but I want to wait until I decide on a cam and match the stall speed to the cams power band. I really have my eye on that gx5-2 cam :-D
