I'm not familiar with the 02 Z, but on most cars:

Remove screws on back side of base of wheel. Remove airbag cover, taking great care to not set it off (remove neg terminal). You should be able to disco the airbag and remove it. Then you will need a special tool to remove the wheel from the column.

I can't remember the name of the tool, I know someone will.

If I remove the battery terminal I am in no risk of blowing the bag? I was under the impression they had a back up power source. Does it hurt when you get spanked with one?

It'll leave a few burn marks, plus you'll be out the xxx amount of money you could sell it for. That's why I said be careful, in addition to disco the battery.

You might want to read the removal procedure in the factory manual or even the Chiltons manual. Is has precautions regarding the time required for the capacitor in the deployment system to discharge, AFTER the battery is disconnected. After waiting, disconnect the yellow airbag harness connector at the base of the steering column and you should be OK. There are also some specific steps for removing the airbag harness contact ring that floats on top of the steering column shaft. I used the Chiltons procedure, and salvaged all the parts for resale.

Yeah, don't remove that airbag unless you know exactly what you're doing.

If one of those things go off, and you're in close proximity of it, prepare to get royally b**** slapped. I believe most injuries from airbags comes from you actually hitting yourself if you're holding your hands/arms in front of you or with tools. It happens so fast, it just pushes your arms or whatever's in front of you right in your face. Prepare to see stars.
