ebay find of the week: 1 of the 45 monterrey maroon '99 Camaros

This really isn't all that impressive to me (muchless many of you probably) but this is one of the 45 Camaros that came in Monterrey Maroon Metallic in 1999. 32 were coupes (17 Z28s), 13 were convertibles (4 Z28s). This one is a Z28 coupe. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-...item4156e6c1d3

Why were 45 of them made in 1999? GM wanted the color available at the very start of the 2000 model year, and decided to go ahead and start using the color.

Is it really all that special? Well, no, not really. It's technically rare, but isn't what I would call desirable. There's nothing particularly special about it because there were over 3000 similar Camaros in 2000 and the color was used until 2002 so there are several thousand more visually just like it.

This particular one has 120k miles on it, the wrong wheels, and isn't perfect (lots of minor problems you can see in the pictures I'm not posting), but it is one of the 17 Z28 coupes.

I guess what is interesting about the color is there were never any SSes made in it and you couldn't get the Y3F sport appearance package. Why? Eh... I don't really know.

Anybody know why you couldn't get MMM or Mystic Teal Metallic and a few other colors on the '98-'02 SSes or have the Y3F sport appearance package with them? Is it a paint matching issue? Anybody have any info that explains why?

It's blind in that eye. It's a genetic issue.

The headlights one cloudy one clear, makes me think it might have been smashed on the clear side, was replaced?

Actually, my mom's '99 V6 car has one cloudy light and one clear one. She's had it since about 2002 and neither has been replaced. One just deteriorated, and one didn't. And Brandon, are you saying no Monterey Maroon SS's were made in ANY year? I only ask because I have an issue of GMHTP that features a GMMG-prepped Monterey Maroon car with the SS hood and wing, which I would imagine was originally shipped as an SS to be converted.

Yeah, MMM wasn't offered as an SS model, same goes for Mystic Teal, Bright Purple Metallic, Bright Blue Metallic, Bright Green Metallic, and maybe some other colors I'm not thinking of. The '96-'97 SS colors were even more restrictive, but I'm not talking about them right now, just '98-'02

There was a MMM Tom Henry SS and I believe a ZL1 too, but neither one were originally SSes before GMMG converted them. A lot of the GMMG converted cars were originally B4C cars or Z28s.

This Tom Henry was a Z28.

There was 1 SS in Mystic Teal from the factory, but I'm not getting into that issue right now

Please, do tell. I saw a teal 96 SS for sale a few years back. It was listed online and was being offered by some specialty car dealer in Michigan, as I recall. But it was the regular teal, not the mystic.

The '96 SSes in bright teal are very rare (about 70 of them), but only 1 98 SS was made in Mystic Teal. It was a pre-production car before GM decided not to offer the color on the SS. The car still exists somewhere. It's a convertible and somebody installed one of those dumb Mustangish (or even Dodge Viper RT-10ish) fake, plastic roll bars in it. I think RK Sport sold them.

They're known as "style bars" in 5.0 circles. I actually like them on Mustangs, but they look kinda goofy on F-cars. And yes, RK Sport is guilty of peddling the hideous things.

Speaking of teal cars and Vipers, see what info you can find on the Mongoose project. It was a teal 6-speed 96 Formula WS6 test mule that GM lightly modified to beat the Viper RT10 in a drag race. It was featured in HPP's "Department X" around 8 years ago. I've since lost that magazine, and I can't find any other info on it.

I've never heard of it. I don't follow the Firebird stuff unless I accidentally find something. It'd be interesting to see for sure.

It's not this is it? Because I'm pretty sure it'd beat a Viper no trouble Funny how it's teal even though this obviously isn't it.
