Arrow NEWS: Gearhead Performance Group plans another Camaro-based Trans Am replica

Gearhead Performance Group 2010 Pontiac Trans Am - Click above for high-res image gallery

How many Chevrolet Camaro-based Pontiac Trans Am replicas can what we assume to be a rather small market support? We've already seen Kevin Morgan's Phoenix T/A revival as well as our personal favorite, the Lingenfelter 455 T/A Concept that we saw last November at the annual SEMA Show in Vegas, and now it seems that we can add a third Trans Am to the growing list of replicas, this one from Gearhead Performance Group.

One thing that certainly caught our attention that the Gearhead T/A will supposedly offer as an option is a 900 horsepower 6.2 liter twin turbo LS9 V8 engine. Besides that, we see the typical and fully expected split front grille, fender vents, ducktail spoiler and snowflake wheels. There will also be a gaud gold-accented interior option for the ultimate in 1970s style. Just add a CB radio and you'll be good to go.

looks ok, but the front is the weakest design point and also the tailpipes should be before the rear tire or out the back, looks terrible on the bumper.

I'm a HUGE Trans Am fan, but I've yet to see one of these "recreations" that is exciting. The front and spoiler are just terrible, although the tailights are better than the Kevin Morgan design. What I don't understand is why no one is doing something that is a modern take on a Trans Am instead of recreating the '77.

Am I the only one that thinks a Trans Am conversion from a Camaro should borrow from all the previous ones instead of focusing on just one model? They could elimate the gold pinstripes and birds, and go subtle with them like the last generation. The shaker also looks weird on top on the Camaro's hood - maybe it's too high? For that matter, why not do twin hood scoops? The spoiler could be more of a wing shape, like the later models, and differentiate from Camaro a bit more.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that these designs all recall the past, but without the flair the Camaro does. For the folks that think the Camaro is retro - these Trans Am concepts REALLY are!! Someone PLEASE bring the Trans Am into the future!!

i agree with you on most of that. the only thing i dont agree with is the combination of all the years. thats what most of these trans am recreations have done wrong. they have picked all different points from different generations and put it on the same car. it doesnt look right. they should stick with 1 styel and take SOME things from it. dont turn the 69 into a 2010. make it "the next generation" trans am. just like with the camaro. its the 5thgen. not the 1st gen redone in modern time. its the next in line.

It's not awful and does have some nice styling cues. Exhaust is badly executed, front air dam is way too low to be practical, tires are too low profile for how the fit in the wheelwells. I am NOT a fan of the late 70's TransAms, just reminds me of the gaudiness of that era. I'm sure it would attract a ton of attention, though.
