The company then overpriced the V-8, more powerful, less fuel-efficient model to keep its sales down.

There's either A)something totally misleading about that article or
B)Some of the BS on this board about how they have to save every $5 because margins are so thin are total BS.

The article mentions 83,000 units in 10 months.. Even if you go by the sales transactions only that comes out to 61K cars, 80% of that is 48800.

48,800 X $8,000 = $390,400,000

To upgrade to the V8 on the G8 (along w/ the 6 speed auto, suspension, wheels, ect) was about $2500. It's $7000 for a Camaro.....

1) I wonder how GM's product planners will interpret these numbers?

2) People are simply not buying the V6, even as GM subsidizes it as a loss leader.

80% V8 sales, oh yeah, no pent up demand there Still though I suppose its welcome news in some sense as the V8 cars are helping to pay development costs off faster.

What happens though when V8 sales taper off and V6 sales only marginally increase or don't increase at all?

I wonder what the dealers have made on top of that. There's not one dealer in the SF Bay Area selling Camaros for less than MSRP, in fact some are still marking it up $5-$10k over MSRP.

How much do you think Brembo brakes, 20" wheels and tires, a different front fascia, beefier transmission, and lots of SS-specific trim costs? I think it'd be easy for that to rack up the $4500 difference.

The G8 GT didn't have any of that -- it was just an engine upgrade and a badge. Also, it's possible that the G8's engine costs less than an LS3.

I have some real concerns regarding the wording in this article as it pertains to what Bob did or didn't say, or actually mean.

Statements that include "transactional" prices in the context have nothing to do with what the manufacturer sees in profit.

I'm not suggesting transactional prices are not important. If a transactional price falls too low then incentives are required and THAT has an effect on the profit the manufacturer can realize.

I was going to say that too. The statement about GM overpricing the V8 sounds like a writers embellishment. There is no Lutz quote.
