Rims offset and backspacing?
I got some 18" rims for my car (1999 firebird) like a year ago and the offset or backspacing is not right for my car. they bolted on fine and the guy who sold them to me said they were made for a firebird, but they stick out just far enough to throw S**t all down the side of my car. So , now that I got a little more money I am going to get some new rims. But this time I want to be sure and get some that not only look good but fit my car exactly and don't stick out any. can I get 17X9 that will not stick out?
and also if anyone knows the backspacing and offset of stock wheels I would like to find that out. also if anyone knows some good web pages to look at for rims I would like to check them out |
I think the offset for the stock wheels is 46mm. I am sure someone else will chime in here and verify/correct that. Just curious what wheels do you have right now? Do you have pictures of them on your car? I am looking for a set of 18s and since I do not drive my car in the rain, I may be interested in yours, but I would have to see how far they stuck out? I am looking for something agressive, but not crazy.

The stock 4th Gen wheels are 16x8, with a 55mm offset. That produces roughly a 6.65" backspace.
The stock 4th Gen wheels on athe WS6 and SS are 17x9, with a 55mm offset. That produced roughly a 7.15" backspace. The best size for a 4th Gen, IMHO is the 17x9.5", available in a lot of places because the Corvettes used a 17x9.5" wheel. You can get "ZR1" replicas in this size for example, Torque Thrust II's, various years of Corvette wheels. For a 17x9 or a 17x9.5" wheel, you can handle a maximum backspace of about 7.40" in the front. The ZR1 replica with a 56mm offset has that dimension and fits correctly. I can post pic's of them if you want. You could also go as low as a 7.00" backspace on a 17x9.5" wheel. I believe that is the standard dimension recommended by ARE for the TT-II's for the 4th Gen. That is about a 45mm offset. In the back, you can use as large as a 7.93" backspace, which corresponds to the ZR1 replica with the GS offset - 50mm, on a 17x11 wheel. That will require some inner fender massaging though. |

For example, If I have a 17 x 9, what is the widest and narrowest tire I can put on this rim and still be ok? I have heard of some people putting 275's on a 9in. rim? In fact, Goodyear has different rim width measurements for the same size tires in different lines. Do a search on 275/40-17 and you get the following results: Recommend a rim width of 9-11": -BFG -Kumho -Michelin -Firestone -Goodyear F1 Supercar Recommend a rim width of 8.5 - 11": -Dunlop -Goodyear GS-C. 2 - The narrower the sidewall, the less variation is allowed in rim width. An 18 to 20" tire is much more critical on rim width than a 15-16" tire. So, go to tire rack and read the specs. They will also show: -outside diameter (you need to match stock) -UTQG rating, including tread life, traction and resistance to temperature buildup -user surveys rating things like dry traction, wet traction, cornering, noise, harshness, tread life, cornering, etc. TIRE RACK |
