My new drag tire setup....

I am running a 5/16" spacer and need to adj. the PHB over 1/4" and everything should clear just fine. I don't even think I will have to trim on the bumper any. I do need to get longer wheel studs but need them anyways.

Tires are MT DR 295/50 16" (28x11.5)

Re: My new drag tire setup....

If the track has any sort of tech, they're not going to permit those mini spares. Temporary spares are specifically prohibited by NHRA - See 5:1 in the "General Regulations".

As far as the gaps to the fender, the radials will not grow like a bias-ply slick, so that should minimize the problem. Watch for grooves on the first couple passes though. What bushings are you running in the LCA's? If you have rubber or poly, there will be some compression under heavy load, reducing the clearance at the front edge of the wheel opening. Spherical rod ends won't move.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

The tracks I run at don't get to crazy on the tech. I ran them last year.

I have poly bushings. I will be keeping a very close eye on the tires for the first few passes. Thanks for the info.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

Well, even if they let you use them, be careful. A buddy of mine with a 9-sec 30th SS convertible was running narrowed factory 17" SS wheels, with top-of-the-line Pirelli 185/60-17's, Z-rated radials. Came down hard from a big wheelstand, and the edge of the rim cut though the sidewall of the tire, it lost all air, and the 30th SS went into the wall. He switched to the correct "skinnies", designed for drag racing, and never had another problem.

You're running a tire with an 81 MPH speed rating, with unknown sidewall characteristics. It would be a shame to see your car in the same condition the 30th SS was after it hit the wall.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

No big wheel stands for me. 81mph is more than I though it would be. Thanks for the info.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

I agree. I used to run a friend's cars at the drag strip. One day I had the left outer tie rod break; no wheel stand, I slammed into the wall. Something small like under rated tires or tie rod ends are no reason to hit a wall and can easily be fixed with a lot less money than it would cost to repair the car if something goes wrong.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

And what if it didn't head for the wall, but instead headed for the car in the other lane... which might be one of us.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

What if there was one case with the gto spares blowing out? I wouldn't run them.

Re: My new drag tire setup....

Bringing this back from the dead, how are you guys getting the GTO rims to fit our bolt circle pattern, I have two but couldn't get them to seat and sit flush with the hub?????

Re: My new drag tire setup....

I had to open the hole for the hub to fit. They make spacers that have to right bolt pattern but I’ve never used a spacer.
