Couple of dumb valve stem questions.

My 97SS still has the original tires & valve stems. The tires are still fine, no dry rot, etc, but the rubber portion of the stems are starting to dry rot.

1st question. The valve stems have a chrome sleeve but the body still appears to be rubber. Are these any different other than appearance from "regular" valve stems? These are not considered metal stems are they?

2nd question. Is it possible to replace a valve stem without unmounting the tire? I've never heard of this being done, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: Couple of dumb valve stem questions.

the valve stem is just a regular rubber stem with with a chrome sleeve, and the tire has to be dismounted to change the stem

The tire doesn't necessarily need to be dismounted from the rim. Just broken down so that the new valve stem can be inserted and pulled through.

Zack............I agree. Just was making the point that it doesn't necessarily need to be dismounted but I will agree that from his postion, he probably doesn't have a way to break the bead of the tire from the rim either.

Re: Couple of dumb valve stem questions.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. I was trying to avoid having to pay the ~ $100 to mount tires just for the sake of putting in new stems.

Re: Couple of dumb valve stem questions.

just call a tire shop and ask how much to replace some valves with chrome stems. I Would just write the invoice up as a free flat(since we dont charge for them) BUT charge for the stems, which is like 2 bucks a piece
