What all controls timing?

I was wondering what all controls timing....seems i have a problem with my timing because my car won't start...it just backfires through intake and never starts.....i just put a new cam in and now i have this problem....i have fire and gas....just not at the right time.....i know that the cam is in right and i know that the computer isn't the problem because i switched it out so i was wondering on the crank position sensor that obdII cars have.....Does that control timing? I am trying to get this car running asap....THANKS IN ADVANCE!

It sounds like the opti is bad or the timing chain was not aligned properly.

no man.
take everything back apart.
there are 2 holes in ure smaller timing gear.
you are supposed to line the hole from the top timing gear to the lower.
but the lower has 2 holes, one being bigger than the other.
alighn the 2 holes on the timing gears properly.
i see people do this alot.

My lower timing gear didn't have any holes just one key way that fit on the crank....no room for error there....I think that I am going to start over though.....I might have got the rocker arms off a little.....i mean i didn't give them time to pump up before i adjusted them....so i'm going to take them back out and then check my cam to see if it is properly aligned.....then i am going to make sure to put the opti back in right and give it a try......Fingers crossed!

i would start with small stuff like wires on wrong, then go to the opti./cam area. and poss. valves too tight.

a compression test will tell you if you have the valves off, or use a vacuum gauge while cranking. sounds like the valves, though. the crank position sensor is used to detect misfires.

Whats up ben dover? How's that rear? lol. As stated above its not the cps, it only measures engine accelaration to dectect cylinder misfire. The opti is the only thing that signals the pcm and the pcm controls it from there. Yep, definitely something off. I hope it's just your rockers too tight, otherwise you gotta pull the front off. If you do, and I hope you don't, (test)fire it up before you put the w.p. back on. Good luck.

Well I find out what was wrong with the car! I had a friend look at it for me and he got it to run.....Sounds Awesome too.....besides the knock in the motor now! Well I guess i took a chance when it went down..in just fixing the top end but the bottom end i guess got some shavings down in it and spun the bearings......Wonder how much turning the crank and new bearings would cost at a shop if i brought them the short block.....The reason it wouldn't crank before was because my opti was in wrong? Don't know how i did that one but i some how did....Well I guess that I have to pull the motor now and it's raining like crazy out side........The reason it broke the first time though was because when i did my cam swap the first time i had to use one of the stock pushrods because i bent one of the other pushrods by it being to loose and slung out the pushrod out of the rockerarm and bent it to a 90 degree boomerang......used one of the stock pushrods and it didn't like the guideplates that i used....well it ate up the pushrod and all of the shavings fell ontop of the short block....well the only thing that i can figure what happened was the shavings fell inbetween the lifters and the plates that hold the lifters striaght......well the plate bent the spider thing that holds them down and the plate jumped up......the lifter inturn starts spinning and starts hitting the cam....puts a couple of good quarter size dents in the cam....so i replace the cam and all of the valve train.....taking a chance on the shortblock being ok....because i just had it rebuilt 6k miles ago.....well guess not...should have check it the first time i suppose....My luck is *****TY this month!

any time you have a part fail like that, you can expect it to tear up some bearings and journals.

Pull your drain plug and check your oil in the future. saves alot of headachs. It tells you that you shouldnt wast your time.
