Buying a car in Indiana

Howdy from Texas all you Midwest guys!

Friend of mine just bought a 95 T/A from Indiana (somehwere south of Indianapolis) to be shipped overseas and I am going to pick it up in a few days. Since I don't know what the procedure with plates is in IN, I thought I'd ask here.

Do the plates stay on the car or do they stay with the seller? Basically, do I need temporary plates to drive the car back to Texas?

Any input is greatly appreciated, guys!

The plates stay with the owner; not the car. You guys in Texas are one of the few states where the plates stay with the car! :D

You will need to have some sort of temp plate to get it back to Texas.

I bought a car out of KY late last year and the plates stayed with the car on that. Got them in my garage.

If you need a "temp" plate bring one with you that is registerd back to you and keep the title to the car with you until you get over to the BMV to get plates on it. If you get stopped you have something to show that you own the car that way.
Otherwise you might have to go to a local BMV here and get some type of 30 day tag they might have....I don't know off hand if they do that or not. My wife moved here from NY and they had to wait for paperwork from NY before they would issue her IN plates so they gave her a small piece of paper for her windshield in case she got stopped...she drove with no plates for a number of days. It sounded strange to me but thats what the BMV did.
