JUNE 26th, 2007 SX PERFORMANCE STREET CAR SHOOTOUT FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 1968 565 Camaro 0.405 8.684 157.78
RU Ray Arthur, Edwardsville, IL 1967 427 Camaro 0.091 10.232 132.59

Sporting an ominous “For Sale” sign on the rear window of his black ‘68 Camaro, Tim “Moose” Mallicoat continued his obliteration of the 2007 SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series with an unprecedented eighth consecutive victory.
Still undefeated in nine career final round appearances, Mallicoat stopped Ray Arthur’s “Suspicion” ‘67 Camaro in the championship dash of an event in which both drivers recorded career-best elapsed times and speeds. The biggest story of the thirteenth SCSS event of the year, however, was the showdown which never happened.

With heavy rain to the east of Gateway International Raceway and gathering clouds to the west, the threat of rain kept many regulars at home. In fact, GIR was pounded by a large thunderstorm during midday. Despite the wet grounds, odd weather conditions actually created a surprisingly low corrected altitude for the second week of summer. With humidity reaching eighty-two percent, cooler temperatures from the cloud cover and an unusually high 30.17 Hg barometric pressure allowed the altitude to drop from over two thousand feet above sea level when timed trials began to only 1407 feet during the final rounds.

Fans arriving early knew that Mallicoat’s dominance was threatened by the appearance of Steven Gentry’s outrageous ‘65 Mercury Comet. The second quickest Ford in SCSS history, Gentry was the low qualifier on the March 27th opening night of the 2007 season recording an 8.81-second blast at 153.30 miles per hour. After nine weeks of Mallicoat’s nonstop eight-second performances, even the “Moose Crew” admitted they “had some competition tonight”.

Gentry took advantage of early timed trials but, even without using nitrous oxide injection, the silver Mercury lumbered to an off-pace 10.42/136.50. “We’re trying a new camshaft”, noted Gentry’s crew chief, “but that run sure didn’t impress anybody. It had nothing on the bottom end”. Mallicoat made his first shot only thirteen minutes into the official qualifying period with a typical 8.81/156.79 blast from his naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch “Rat motor”.

Gentry’s second effort was more respectable; despite a still-sluggish 1.41-second sixty feet ET, the 557-inch Comet improved to a 9.26/144.86 greeted by cheers from the grandstands. Would Mallicoat finally have a battle for the trophy? “It’s still not right”, lamented Gentry’s crew, “and our laptop just took a dump. We’re tuning this one blind”. Mallicoat pulled back into the staging lanes and quickly responded with a brutal 8.72 at a career-best 157.95 mph. One hour later, Gentry returned for another attempt but the Comet struggled to a 10.96/138.70. “We discovered a nitrous problem back in the pits”, said his now-frazzled crew chief, “and that run was to see how bad it was. It’s bad”.

While dismayed, the Ford fans were not without hope even though Gentry’s Comet was the only non-Chevrolet to qualify in the top four positions. Allen “Crabby” Hannel, the new wheelman for Hal Marshall’s 383-inch small block S-10 pickup, proved what a skinny driver could do in “Animal Hal’s” truck by clocking the quickest and fastest run for the Illinois-based rig so far, a 10.11 at 133.26 mph, to qualify third. Ray Arthur, the runner-up in the May 8th SCSS bash, ran only one hundredth of a second slower than his best-ever with a 10.42/132.99 to round out the field.

When eliminations began, Mallicoat not only strapped a half-second holeshot on Hannel’s truck but rocketed to an even quicker 8.71/157.58 to cover the S-10’s 10.27/131.77. When Arthur lined up against Gentry’s Comet, however, the Chevy pilot watched as Gentry purged his nitrous oxide system and, with a matter-of-fact glance, put his Camaro into the beams. With a two-tenths holeshot, Arthur was in front quickly but, to the horror of the Ford fans, the Comet never threatened the Chevy. Arthur’s “Suspicion” entry blasted out its quickest run ever by four tenths of a second with a stunning 10.03/133.49 over Gentry’s 11.41/125.53.

“I was scared to death of that man”, admitted Arthur while preparing for the trophy dash, “and back in the pits I changed the timing…pretty drastically…and hoped for the best. I figured I must have redlighted; he was nowhere near me and I couldn’t figure out why. I asked ‘Hoot’ at the timeslip booth if I redlighted and he said, ‘No! You won!’. I couldn’t believe it! I don’t expect Moose to have problems but I’ll give him my best shot”.

True to his word, Arthur posted an 0.091-second Reaction Time against the infamous black Camaro
and was actually leading the battle for the first two hundred feet. After that, Mallicoat’s Chevy ripped to a 5.57-second eighth-mile, (only two hundredths of a second from SCSS Record Holder Sam Moore’s 5.55 best), and capped the run with a best-ever 8.68 at 157.78 mph for win number nine.
In the winner’s circle with announcer Jason Phillips, Mallicoat finally addressed the “For Sale” sign on the window. “I’ve been toying with the idea of swapping this drivetrain into my old blue ‘68 Camaro”, said Mallicoat, referring to the wildly popular wheelstanding Chevy he campaigned before debuting the black beast. “I think it would make a pretty cool combination but we’ll see if we get any offers on this car before we make a decision. I can’t imagine the blue car would be any slower than this one, though”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Earning the “Long Distance Award” for the event was the surprising appearance of veteran west coast bracket racer Phil Doughty. The Las Vegas, Nevada, driver drew plenty of onlookers in the pits with his turbocharged ‘68 Camaro which qualified for the Super Sixteen with a coasting best of 10.80 at only 110 mph. The car has attended several western street car events and has clocked over 125 mph in the 2200-feet elevation at Las Vegas…Brandon Carter’s bronze Mustang qualified with a best-ever 10.58/132.91 and became the forty-sixth member of the 130 MPH Club. The 306-incher then hit 10.55/133.49 in late timed trials after the conclusion of qualifying…Even after testing last Wednesday, Tony Huff’s silver Nova was again missing in action. Huff gained qualifying points in brother Dale’s 510-inch ‘66 Chevelle…Joe Williams, who earned his first SCSS trophy after scoring a runner-up at the June 12th event, finally sorted out his ignition problems with a 10.59/127.74. On his third run of the night, however, Williams’ yellow ’70 Nova took the Maryville, Illinois racer on the ride of his life with the tallest wheelstand seen in SCSS competition in quite a while…Greg “Hook-n-Ladder” Boschert achieved a personal goal of making a full-throttle run which didn’t end in GIR’s sandtrap. The St. Louis fireman’s white ‘66 Mustang coupe stumbled on its early passes but recovered before the end of qualifying with a career-best 10.76 at 128.18 mph. He later presented the GIR Safety Crew with a bag of pea gravel cleaned from his Ford after his off-track excursion on June 5th…A veritable herd of Corvettes attended the event for some inter-club grudge racing with members of the Boone Trail Corvette Club, the Original Corvette Club of St. Louis and the Looking Glass Corvette Club out in force. Two of the Corvette racers managed to qualify in the Super Sixteen; Joe Hatleli’s yellow ‘06 Z06 was the quickest of the breed with an 11.68 at a whopping 126.89 mph while past Super Truck Shootout champ Brad Swartz’s red ‘07 model ran a best of 12.01 at 123.13 mph to become the 131st member of the SCSS 120 MPH Club...Paul Pickering’s 383-inch 2000 Camaro SS also entered the 120 Club with a best-ever 11.52/122.72...The quickest of the six-cylinders was Bobby Ellis’ supercharged 195-inch Chrysler Crossfire at 13.32/107.53--not counting the 9.58/140.81 clocked by the single 4-bbl V6 Chevy Cobalt of four-time NHRA World Champion Jeff Taylor of Lumberton, North Carolina, who was testing during the event. Ellis also found time to make a lap in his PT Cruiser…So far in 2007, one hundred twelve different drivers have run quicker than 13.00 and failed to qualify for the Super Sixteen.

JUNE 26th, 2007 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Kenton Spann, St. Louis. MO 1998 231 Grand Prix 0.047 15.257 97.27
RU Jesse Amsinger, Eureka, MO 2004 146 Neon 0.502 15.618 99.94

On a night when virtually every “hitter” decided to stay home, Kenton Spann and Jesse Amsinger owned the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. Spann’s immaculate 1998 Daytona 500 Pace Car Edition Pontiac Grand Prix scored the win from the second qualifying position but, like Amsinger, the longtime regular attendee was just happy to be in the championship battle.

By winning his first STSS title, Spann also became only the second driver of a Front-Wheel-Drive six-cylinder machine to win a Sport Tuner Showdown event. Following the May 10th, 2005 and June 6th, 2006 victories by fellow Pontiac Grand Prix driver Brad Gross, Spann became the twenty-first driver to win an STSS crown in fifty-one completed events.

Amsinger’s black 2004 SRT-4 Neon led qualifying with a best of 14.08/102.34 with Spann, (whose Grand Prix has been as quick as 13.73 in 2006), only three hundredths of second behind at 14.11/97.86. The rest of the Top Five included Phil Wick’s bronze SRT-4 Neon, (14.27/100.82), Jacob Kreigesmann’s ‘04 Saturn Ion Redline, (14.56/97.45), and Brett Schumacher’s ‘04 Nissan Sentra, (15.44/89.91).

In the final round, Spann dumped a half-second holeshot on Amsinger but both drivers ran into traction problems making for a free-for-all. Amsinger’s Phase II package-equipped, intercooled Neon had decidedly more top-end horsepower but Spann recovered quicker and held on for a 15.25/97.27 to 15.61/99.94 win. “I had some problems earlier”, said Spann in his first winners’ circle celebration, “but I thought I had everything back to normal in the final. Then, it spun the tires but, apparently, not as bad as he did. I’m just glad to finally win one of these trophies! This is very cool!”.

JUNE 26th, 2007 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Allen Hannel, Caseyville, IL 1986 383 S-10 0.550 10.129 132.39
RU Al Ingram, Belleville, IL 1990 572 Silverado 0.165 12.811 108.60

Two wins in two outings is a tough act to follow but Allen “Crabby” Hannel, who has taken over the driving chores of the winningest vehicle in GIR Tuesday night racing history, proved his ability en route to his second straight GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown victory. With a career-best of 10.19/131.82 under Hal’s tutelage, Hannel took the S-10 to a 10.26/131.20 best in his first night in the cockpit. On his first run of this week’s event, Hannel hit a 10.21 at 132.66 mph; he came back in thirty minutes and charged to a 10.11 at 133.25!
The Caseyville, Illinois drive came back for a third run and proved his performance was no fluke with a 10.13/133.26.

Only two-time Super Truck finalist Al Ingram was close. Ingram‘s black ’90 Silverado, using a carbureted 572 Chevy “crate motor” this season in place of his original supercharged 454, ran a best of 12.71/109.18 during qualifying making the final round ahead of David Rowe’s wild twin-turbocharged 302-powered ‘68 Ford Ranchero, (a best-ever 13.02/108.73).

After slowing to a 10.27/131.77 in the semi-finals of the Street Car Shootout, Hannel returned to form in the Super Truck final with a 10.12/132.39 to outdistance Ingram’s 12.81/108.60. For “Crabby” Hannel, it’s an undefeated start to a new career. For Hal Marshall, it’s a blast just watching his truck continue winning. And for the truck? For the little white S-10, it was just the twenty-seventh win in forty-seven completed events.
