JUNE 16th, 2009 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat Collinsville, IL 68 565 Camaro 0.170 8.700 155.17
RU Curtis Paulfrey Brighton, IL 68 502 Camaro Could Not Appear

Tim “Moose” Mallicoat has made it official. The Collinsville, Illinois, driver of the M&M Automotive/Huff Motorsports “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro is now the true king of the Street Car Shootout Series event at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. By securing his fourth consecutive event victory in his eighth straight final round appearance of 2009, Mallicoat finally exceeded the career total of thirty-eight final rounds for Super Truck Showdown hero Hal Marshall. In addition to his thirty-nine finals, Mallicoat has the most event victories, (thirty-two), the most low qualifier awards, (thirty), and the most elimination round wins, (sixty-nine), of any of the almost eight thousand different racers who have competed in the SCSS since its first event on April 4th, 2004.

Along with being the only two-time SCSS season point champion, (2007-2008), Mallicoat has been victorious in 29.6% of the 108 completed SCSS events and has appeared in the final round in 36.1% of all SCSS races. Even more remarkable, however, is the fact Mallicoat entered his first SCSS race on September 5th, 2006, and has only competed in fifty-two completed SCSS programs. When considering only the races in which Mallicoat has been a contestant, his career final-round percentage jumps to an amazing 75.0% and he has won a stunning 61.5% of all SCSS events he has entered!

Mallicoat’s historic thirty-second title came somewhat easier than other recent victories through no fault of his own. Although there was no threat of rain, (finally!), surrounding the eleventh scheduled SCSS meet of 2009, racers were greeted by weather which nearly duplicated last week’s horrible conditions. When the gates opened, the 82-degree temperature combined with 58% relative humidity to create a corrected elevation of 2,299 feet above sea level. Incredibly, the “air” got progressively worse throughout the event as the humidity rose to a stifling 97% during the final rounds. In addition, the track temperature broke the 120-degree mark for the first time this season although the surface did “stiffen up” as the surface temp decreased after sunset.

Assessing the weather and his competition, “Moose” waited almost two hours after the official qualifying periods began to make his sole attempt. Knowing his naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch Chevy powerplant would perform best once the air and racing surface had cooled, Mallicoat staged up when the western grandstands had sufficiently shaded the racetrack and launched to an impressive 1.28-second sixty feet elapsed time before thundering to an 8.73-second quarter-mile at 155.33 miles per hour. Satisfied with the result, “Moose” parked the Camaro for the remainder of qualifying and helped his sixteen year-old son, (Tim, Junior), compete in High School Eliminator.

Curtis Paulfrey, whose yellow Winner’s Circle Automotive-sponsored 502-inch naturally-aspirated ‘68 Camaro struggled on June 10th, appeared with several new tricks in an effort to combat the summer weather. “We changed a lot of things since last week”, said Paulfrey before qualifying began, “to try to get the car to come around. In the ’good air’ early in the season, we were within a few hundredths of running in the nine-second zone. I went on a serious diet to get some weight out of the car but, tonight, we’ve got a bunch of new equipment we’re trying”. Without further elaboration, Curtis clocked consecutive qualifying runs of 10.20/133.09, 10.10/133.26 and 10.08/133.54 for a bonafide improvement over the previous week’s 10.48/133.21 in similar conditions. “We already corrected the first two runs to sea level and both passes would’ve been in the nines”, said Curtis’ elated father and crew chief, Joe Paulfrey, after a career-best 1.45-second “sixty” on the 10.08 effort.

Don Moore, who earned his first Super Truck Showdown finalist position during the June 10th event, blasted to a best-ever 10.20/124.86 in his black nitrous-oxide aided 468-inch ’91 S-10 pickup for the third position and perennial SCSS qualifier Ray Arthur arrived late but managed one qualifying pass of 10.28/133.09 without nitrous injection on his 496-inch “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro, (which usually produces low nine-second efforts). “We got hung up putting the car back together after we tore the motor down last week”, said Arthur after making the field in one shot. “About 7:30 PM at the shop, I told John (Brawley, the driver of Arthur’s second team car, the “S-10 Revenge” pickup), to just go to the track without me and, if I get there in time, I’ll run. I got the car running but didn’t have enough time to sort out the nitrous system so I just decided to run without it. So what happens? I get here with twenty minutes left in qualifying, make one run and bump John out of the Top Four!”

When Moore decided, as is his option, to run only in the Super Truck Showdown, Brawley could’ve gotten into the field as an alternate but he, too, elected to race only for the truck title. That allowed second alternate, Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert, into the field with his well-known 331-inch nitrous-aided white ’66 Mustang coupe. The St. Louis firefighter produced a respectable 10.94/124.78 during qualifying on eight-inch-wide D.O.T. rubber noting, “I’m really getting a handle on the new progressive nitrous controller and, even though the car‘s still spinning the tires a bit, it’s a lot better than it has been in the past”.

Eliminations opened with a critical match between Paulfrey and Arthur in which Paulfrey had a chance to narrow the gap in the SCSS season point standings between the two in their battle for second place behind Mallicoat. With both machines now naturally-aspirated and Paulfrey running two tenths quicker, Arthur pushed the ’Tree and fouled by a mere nine thousands of a second while clocking an improved 10.17/121.96 against Paulfrey’s slightly slowing 10.11/133.05. In the other half of the semi-finals, Boschert strapped a massive three-tenths of a second holeshot on Mallicoat and led the Chevy to the Christmas Tree before “Moose” charged to an 8.71/154.69 against the Mustang’s 11.32/121.45. Laughed Boschert, “I distinctly remember being ahead of him for about three-quarters of a second! I ran out of nitrous on the run but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have mattered.”

The final round was affected not by weather conditions but by Paulfrey’s work schedule, which calls for him to leave the track no later than 9:30 PM. Unfortunately, Paulfrey returned to the pits after his semi-final victory and had to head straight to his job rather than run in his third career SCSS finale leaving Mallicoat to make a solo run for his thirty-second winner’s trophy. Undaunted, the “Moose” covered the first sixty feet in an exceptional 1.26 seconds and charged to Low ET of the Meet at 8.70/155.17.

“This weather is miserable but I sure can’t complain about the car”, said Mallicoat during winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstands. “It made three runs within three hundredths of a second and it didn’t spin the tires once tonight. You never like to make a single run in the final round but Curtis is trying to race and get to work in the span of an hour so you know he’s thrashing just to make the first round. Honestly, I don’t know how he does it!”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Despite the lack of oxygen and hot track surface, the event featured a surprising amount of carnage including two destroyed engines and no less than four broken rearendsAndy Park, whose 462-inch green ’69 Chevelle has run as quick as 11.14/119.72 suffered a major engine calamity during the first hour of qualifying and was forced to withdraw…Pat McNeish, the popular owner of Performance Parts Plus in Granite City, Illinois, arrived late with his slick black ’86 555 Silverado and was forced to shut off early on his only qualifying run since he was completing his NHRA licensing procedure. McNeish did manage a 9.92/136.08 in late timed trials while carrying the front wheels higher than ever…The MD Performance gang had a decent night. Dustin Kurz qualified his silver ’93 347 Mustang with a 10.96/120.28 and improved to a 10.82/118.66 in late timed trials while teammate Zach Douglas made the field with his 306-powered ’93 LX with a 10.97/125.27 and, during late timed trials, clicked off runs of 10.88/125.29, 10.90/125.20 and 10.83/125.86...The only new entry to any of the SCSS Performance Clubs was Bryan Shoot, whose 302-powered green ’93 Mustang clocked an 11.26/120.05 to become the 217th member of the 120 MPH Club…The Super Sixteen Field included seven Chevrolets, six Fords, two Chrysler products and Aaron Hagen’s lone naturally-aspirated Pontiac Firebird…Mark Yehling returned to action for the first time since May 19th; his bright white ‘97 version was the only Corvette to make the field…Four drivers, Bryan Shoot, Greg Shekell (in a 2003 Cobra), Brian Detert (with his amazing 2005 Chrysler Crossfire), and Dan Elkhardt (in a black primered ’67 350 Chevelle), qualified in the Super Sixteen field for the first time…A total of seventy-nine drivers have earned points in the 2009 SCSS Championship chase…Jerry Dalton, a 1994 GIR track champion and the first winner of the track’s most prestigious honor, the Earl Liverpool Memorial Award, entered the event with his notorious blue ‘92 360 Dodge Dakota pickup and just missed qualifying for the Super Sixteen field with a 12.78/103.83 best. Dalton had the week off from his day job as driver of Bob Chandler’s “Bigfoot 11” monster truck; the St. Louisan is getting married this weekend and brought his fiancee to the track. The longtime drag racer was voted the Monster Truck Racing Association’s 2008 Rookie of the YearPhil Reichardt, whose Phine Designs ‘67 Camaro is still the quickest smallblock Chevy in SCSS history at 8.70/158.04, was at the track wrenching the new Junior Dragster of his his eight year-old son, Jakob. “We’ve been waiting on parts for the Camaro all year”, said the four-time SCSS finalist, “but we’re planning to be out here running within a month”…While point leader Derek Allen had to play for his Waterloo (IL) High School golf team in a tournament, defending High School Eliminator season champion Matt Gosch, took his low-twelve-second 455 Buick-powered ‘83 Regal Station Wagon from Bunker Hill (IL) H.S. to his second consecutive win in High School Eliminator defeating Collinsville (IL) High School racer Tim “Little Moose” Mallicoat, Jr., at the wheel of his fourteen-second Chevy S-10 pickup.

SPECIAL NOTE: As noted in the 2009 GIR schedule released in February, Gateway International Raceway will be shot down for thirteen days due to a rental of the entire facility by Marlboro. Therefore, THERE WILL BE NO SCSS EVENT HELD ON JUNE 22nd. The next event of any kind on the GIR schedule is the SCSS program on Tuesday, June 30th.

JUNE 16th, 2009 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Dan Harris St. Louis MO 04 232 Mustang 0.152 12.405 107.46
RU Brian Detert St. Louis MO 05 195 Crossfire 0.544 12.564 110.70

Like “Moose” Mallicoat in the SCSS, Dan Harris has been dominant in the 2009 St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. Appearing in his sixth consecutive final round of the season, the driver of the “Six Bang ‘Stang” recouped from his slowing performance and runner-up on June 10th to earn his third STSS title.

After a dismal best last week of 12.67/102.71 despite the fact his rear-wheel-drive V6 Mustang had run as quick as 12.15 during the early season, Harris returned to form with a 12.405/107.28 to barely lead the qualified field. Only six hundredths of second behind the red Ford was the always-potent silver 2005 Chrysler Crossfire of Brian Detert, who coaxed a 12.46/112.40 from his RWD six-cylinder rig. The rest of the Top Five included Jim Garrison’s silver 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4, (a career-best 13.03/112.44), John Siner’s impressive black 219-inch six-cylinder 2005 Cadillac CTS, (13.56/105.27), and Dale Skaggs’ 97-inch black 2000 Honda Civic, (14.35/96.46),

During the May 19th event, Detert led qualifying with a 12.20/112.87, (the quickest six-cylinder run of the year to date), over Harris but was unable to appear for eliminations. In the duo’s first official meeting for a championship, however, Harris was ready. A huge holeshot and a second consecutive 12.405 from the past High School Eliminator Season Champion put the nitrous-aided Ford ahead of the Crossfire’s 12.56/110.70. “The only thing we changed from last week was have the guys at Memory Lane Customizing and Fabrication in Cool Valley (MO) put new spark plugs in it”, said Harris while accepting his third winner’s trophy of the year. “Apparently, that’s all it needed because it ran the same number twice…to the thousandth of a second!”. Despite the runner-up, Detert’s unique Crossfire was still the subject of much conversation during awards ceremonies in front of the main grandstands. “Not many people realize the SRT-6 version of these cars was available from the factory with a supercharged AMG Mercedes-Benz 3.2-liter V6 engine“, said the six-feet-six driver of the diminutive MoPar two-seater. “The engine is rated at 330 horsepower in stock form. I’ve added a different size blower drive pulley and an intake but, other than that, the car runs in the low twelves with basically stock parts and a five-speed automatic“.

JUNE 16th, 2009 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Don Moore Pontoon Beach IL 91 468 S-10 0.355 10.179 124.41
RU John Brawley Granite City IL 93 355 S-10 0.089 10.849 121.50

After a runner-up in his first final round on June 10th, Don Moore quickly scored his first victory in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown. More importantly, after a 10.75/120.01 best-ever the previous week, Moore’s Morgan Racing-sponsored black ‘91 S-10 pickup improved almost six tenths of a second in its second week out on D.O.T. “street rubber” to become the second quickest truck of the 2009 season.

Moore’s nitrous-aided 468-inch truck led qualifying with a tremendous 10.20/124.86 ahead of John Brawley’s off-pace 10.92/121.41 in Ray Arthur’s R&R Towing naturally-aspirated “S-10 Revenge”. Ironically, the strongest truck at the event was unable to qualify; Pat McNeish‘s Performance Parts Plus ’86 555 Silverado spent the event wheelstanding its way through the NHRA licensing procedure before running as quick as 9.92/136.08 after qualifying had ended.

In the final round, Brawley opened up a massive quarter-second holeshot and actually led Moore past the 330-feet mark before the black bigblock made its move just before the eighth-mile on its way to an even quicker 10.17/124.41! When asked from whence the newfound performance came, Moore replied, “We just ran it harder this week! We weren‘t sure the tires would hold last week but we felt it could take a lot more power than we first thought. All I really had to do was make sure I didn’t redlight like I did last week when the truck pulled me through the staging beams”. Ray Arthur offered some insight to Brawley’s lagging performance in the show-quality “S-10 Revenge” by adding, “Since we put the new 355 small block in the truck at the beginning of the year, we’ve done nothing to it but change the oil once. With the problems I‘ve been having with my Camaro, we may have neglected the truck a little bit. I think it’s trying to tell us it needs some attention!”.
