Tuesday SCSS Track Records can be set during the two official qualifying or championship rounds. The first official Street Car Shootout qualifying period begins at 6:30 PM and the second official qualifying begins at approximately 8:00 PM, (barring unforeseen circumstances). At 10:00 PM, the four quickest qualifiers meet in no-handicap eliminations advancing two winners to the championship final round. Each of the Top 16 qualifiers receives a "Fastest Street Car Qualifier" decal. The SCSS trophies and decals are presented by Gateway Raceway.com. Additionally, the two quickest Sport Tuner drivers, (open to all passenger cars except Rear-Wheel-Drive vehicles with engines of eight cylinders or more), also meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by St. Louis Street Racers.com and the two quickest Super Truck drivers, (open to all trucks and utility vehicles), meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by Gateway Raceway.com. MAY 19th, 2009 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat Collinsville, IL 68 565 Camaro 0.189 8.619 158.02
RU Orson Johnson House Springs, MO 99 281 Mustang Could Not Appear

For Tim “Moose” Mallicoat, it was simply a matter of another week of racing leading to another barrier busted as the intrepid Collinsville, Illinois, driver chalked up a record thirtieth event title in the Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Like so many previous SCSS battles in which his naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro was neither the quickest or fastest machine on the property, Mallicoat’s astonishing consistency led to his fifth trophy in six completed 2009 events and an perfect streak of final round appearances for the season. In what has become the year’s biggest rivalry, Mallicoat was to meet Ford pilot Orson “O.J.” Johnson for the third consecutive week but the only driver to beat Mallicoat this season was unable to appear for the match after recording the event’s best performance numbers.

Another massive turnout of over two hundred racers contributed to 2009’s quickest Super Sixteen field despite atmospheric conditions which were good but not great. The corrected elevation took a tumble from a reading of 1375 feet above sea level when qualifying began to only 475 feet when the final rounds were contested helping just over half of all machines entered to record career-best elapsed times or speeds.

With a new format in which qualifying for the Super Sixteen field began immediately upon the start of the event, (although timed trials after the official qualifying sessions are still permitted), it was Ray Arthur’s well-known “Suspicion” 496-cubic inch nitrous oxide-aided ’67 Camaro which hit the first big numbers at 9.25 seconds and 145.96 miles per hour. It didn’t take Mallicoat long to make his first effort, though. Entering the recent Outlaw All Stars heads-up event at GIR in the Outlaw Eliminator division, Mallicoat destroyed his car’s PowerGlide two-speed automatic transmission just off the starting line on his first qualifying attempt of that race. After a few phone calls, Mallicoat located a suitable replacement from fellow Illinois racer Brian Suhre, whose 7.2-second dragster is a fixture at Gateway bracket racing events. Mallicoat left the track before the second qualifying session of the All Stars program and returned to his M&M Automotive shop to begin the swap in preparation of the next SCSS event only three days away! As if the car were untouched from the May 12th SCSS event, Mallicoat’s first run netted an 8.637/157.04, an amazing feat considering the black Camaro’s last pass before the transmission explosion was an 8.647/156.68!

Mallicoat held the pole qualifying position for a mere five minutes, however. Johnson’s red ‘99 Mustang Cobra convertible staged up. Fresh from an appearance at a National Mustang Racers Association National Event in Atco, New Jersey, only two days before, Johnson charged to a brutal 8.42 at a blazing 172.39 mph to grab the lead.

Both the “Moose” and Arthur elected to remain in the pits through the remainder of qualifying but Johnson’s Andy McCoy Race Cars/Hyperformance Motorsports/HP Powdercoatings turbocharged behemoth made a second attempt with only two minutes remaining in the final qualifying session and streaked to an even quicker 8.34 at 172.06 mph! “We learned an awful lot in just one weekend of racing at Atco”, said crewchief Paul Schoelich of Lo Pro Race Cars, “and what we learned has changed the way we’re going to race this car”.

The biggest surprise of qualifying came from unheralded Kenny Allgeyer, whose powder-blue ‘92 Mustang made one solitary qualifying effort but the result, a stout 9.83/138.97, qualified for the field in the fourth spot. However, when the top qualifiers were called in front of the main grandstands for eliminations, Allgeyer never appeared and first alternate Pat McNeish, whose big-inch ’86 Silverado pickup was fresh from his first Super Truck Showdown victory on May 5th, was given the option of racing solely in the Super Truck final or competing in the Street Car Shootout…or both. Surprisingly, the owner of Performance Parts Plus in Granite City, Illinois, decided to run both classes after struggling during qualifying with a best of 10.12 at only 109.10 mph. “We need the test run”, said McNeish, “and we should be able to ‘hot lap’ the truck without any problems”.

In the first battle of the semi-finals, McNeish squared off with Mallicoat’s Camaro and, despite a substantial holeshot of three tenths of a second and a drastically improved 9.81/138.16, the black Chevy truck was passed before the 330-feet mark as Mallicoat thundered to a remarkable consistent 8.631/157.80 victory. In the other half of the semis, Arthur’s wheelstanding Chevy strapped two tenths on Johnson and led the race to four hundred feet before the amazing modular-motored Mustang blasted past on a run which was two hundredths of second quicker at the eighth-mile and at the thousand-feet marks than on its previous 8.34. Just before the finish line, however, a puff of blue smoke emanated from the rear of the Ford ragtop as it coasted across the finish line ahead of Arthur in an 8.41/152.87 to 9.19/146.73 battle. “Uh oh”, said Schoelich as he watched the Ford slow on the top end. “That doesn’t look good”.

After inspecting the Mustang back in the pit area, Johnson was quick to alert Mallicoat that the Ford would be unable to compete against the Chevy in the title bout for the third consecutive week. “We blew a water fitting right out of one of the cylinder heads”, said Johnson, “and we can fix it but not here and not in ten minutes!”. Mallicoat nodded as he strapped into the black “Hellraiser” before making a full-throttle single run at 8.619/158.02 for his eleventh round-win of the season, Having passed the legendary Hal Marshall on May 12th for overall SCSS victories with twenty-nine, his next target will be Marshall’s career total of thirty-eight final round appearances which “Moose” trails by only one.

When asked if anybody helped secure the new transmission, Mallicoat noted, “I wish I could thank somebody but, really, I did it myself. Other than Brian Suhre, who had the transmission to sell, I took the car home from the Outlaw All Stars, unloaded it, pulled the tranny, went to Brian’s shop to get the new one, brought it back to my shop and installed it. I actually had the car running again before midnight on Saturday night…the day we blew it up!”.

Johnson and Schoelich were philosophical in the loss, however, having developed an entirely new racing strategy. “We found out how to actually race a car”, laughed Schoelich during trophy presentations in front of the main grandstand, “and it’s simply a matter of changing the way you approach the sport. So many people wait for the track conditions to come to them and race without adapting to changing temperatures and traction. At Atco, the track was constantly changing over three days and we realized that, in order to do this properly, you just have to be able to adapt. We simply started tuning the car to the track instead of hoping the track would hold what we threw at it and look what happened! We went down the track perfectly three times tonight and, if not for the broken water fitting, we could’ve done it a fourth time. That’s what racing is all about. That’s how real racers do it”.

Johnson concurred, adding, “It’s an entirely different way of looking at things than how most racers think. It’s a great sense of achievement when you figure things out on your own and make your car work instead of hoping it’ll work. I’ve said before I could never do this without Paul’s input but now we feel like we’re really working at this as a team. It’s pretty cool, actually!”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Nobody questioned the traction available at Gateway International Raceway after no less than six cars were towed from the racing surface after destroying drivetrain parts. The most spectacular incidents involved Steve Denny in his ’81 350 El Camino which careened to a stop two hundred feet off the starting line after pitching its entire left rear axle assembly completely out of the car, (the wheel and axle made it to the 3330-feet mark in the opposite lane!), and the potent ‘92 347 Mustang of Dustin Kurz from MD Performance in Frankford, Missouri, which sheared its left wheel at the Christmas Tree…Five-time SCSS finalist Gary Tripp made the first runs of the season in his red ‘69 496-inch Camaro to qualify right behind newlywed Curtis Paulfrey’s yellow Winner’s Circle Tire & Auto 502-inch ‘68 Camaro. First-generation Camaros took four of the top eight qualifying spots!…Zach Douglas upheld the honor of the MD Performance team by qualifying his ‘93 306 Mustang with a career-best 10.78/126.98 and improving to a 10.72/126.97 in late timed trials…Fresh from his best-ever 10.74 during the Outlaw All Stars, Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert qualified with an 11.04/126.80 from his nitrous-aided 331-inch white ‘66 Mustang coupe on eight-inch DOT tires and, so far, has managed not to screw up his entire season…Gray Crane became the 213th member of the SCSS 120 MPH Club when his ‘68 454 Camaro qualified with a best-ever 11.35/121.49. He was followed into the 120 MPH Club by Jerry Boschert, (no relation to the Ford-driving fireman), who appeared with a new four-speed transmisison in his ’60 440 Valiant and ran a best-ever 11,42/121.02 to make the field. David Reeves, with the front fascia still removed from his ‘89 347 Mustang qualified for the second straight week at 11.47/115.90...Ralph Meek’s show-quality ‘68 302 Mustang made the show with an 11.37/117.42, not far from his career-best of 11.30...Andrew Caldieraro anchored the field with an 11.80/115.93 career-best from his 2000 Camaro but fifteenth position was almost four tenths quicker. If not for breakage from several of the regular “hitters”, the bump spot could’ve been one of the ten quickest ever…Quinn Grant’s burgundy 438 Windsor-powered ’93 Mustang clocked a strong 9.68/139.00 but was disqualified, (and pitched!), for lack of NHRA-mandated safety equipment…Can anybody stop Derek Allen? The Waterloo (IL) High School student took his fourth win of the season in High School Eliminator by pushing his high twelve-second “Gator Gumbo” ‘84 305 Cutlass past Union (MO) High School’s Aaron Worstell and his low twelve-second ‘89 Mustang.

MAY 19th, 2009 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Dan Harris St. Louis MO 04 232 Mustang 0.131 12.595 103.47
RU Youree Sadberry St. Louis MO 92 103 Civic Si 0.202 14.971 93.14

Even with six events complete in the 2009 St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown, only two drivers have won championship titles this season. After the third win of the year for Brian Orsborn’s 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 on May 12th, it was Dan Harris who returned to the winner’s circle for his second victory in four final round appearances.

Ironically, Brian Detert’s 2005 supercharged 195-cubic inch six-cylinder 2005 Chrysler Crossfire led qualifying with an impressive 12.20/112.87 and Harris, who clocked a best-ever 12.15/109 during the recent Outlaw All Stars, held the second slot with a 12.38/105.53 from his unique nitrous-aided 232-inch V6 ‘04 Mustang. The remainder of the top five qualifiers included Bruce Halton’s ‘03 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, (which shattered all STSS performance marks for that body style at a tremendous 12.46/111.98), Jim Garrison’s ’04 Neon STR-4, (a best-ever 13.17 at a booming 114.82 mph), and Shane Hinds’ 2008 220-inch six-cylinder Pontiac G8 GT, (a stunning 13.18/106.71).

When the finalists were called in front of the main grandstands for the trophy dash, however, only Harris pulled into position. Alternates were called from the qualifying list but, even five minutes before the final round was to begin, not a single driver appeared. Finally, only seconds before Harris was to make a single run for the automatic victory, Youree Sadberry pulled into the staging area with his red 1992 Honda after being called as fourteenth alternate! Although not a record, (that honor still belongs to Christopher Dell’s Saturn Ion which made the final as sixteenth alternate on April 1st, 2008!), Sadberry’s front-wheel-drive 1.7-liter Civic had run a best of 14.95/94.51 during the official qualifying sessions.

Harris took a slight holeshot and stretched it from there, running 12.59/103.47 for his second trophy over Sadberry’s consistent 14.97/93.14. The MAC Tools-sponsored “SixBang Stang” driver was happy to have an opponent. “I’d rather win while racing somebody for the trophy than just make a single”, said Harris after the final round, “and I’ve been called as an alternate before so I know that’s a big deal for the other guy, too”. Sadberry, unaware of the benefits of appearing in the final round, was happy to find out his trophy was accompanied by a free entry to another Tuesday SCSS event and a disc of photos from Bret Kepner Photos.com. “It’s just a basic ’92 Civic with a B18 C1 (Acura Integra GS-R) engine”, said Sadberry. “It’s got no nitrous, turbo or supercharger; It’s a just a naturally-aspirated street car I’ve been building. I’m glad I stuck around!”.

MAY 19th, 2009 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Pat McNeish Granite City IL 86 555 Silverado 0.465 10.075 138.96
RU John Brawley Granite City IL 93 355 S-10 -0.018 (foul) 10.643 125.48

The winner on May 5th in his first night out in the 2009 GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown, Pat McNeish skipped a week before returning to take his second title of the year and third career victory at the wheel of what has proven to be the quickest and fastest truck of the season. The popular proprietor of Performance Parts Plus in Granite City, Illinois, found himself at the top of the truck program qualifying list but was less than pleased with his best of a coasting 10.12 at only 109.20 mph during the official qualifying sessions.

McNeish’s slick black ’86 Silverado led regular rival John Brawley at the helm of Ray Arthur’s gorgeous “S-10 Revenge” naturally-aspirated smallblock pickup, (a career-best 10.57/125.75). The rest of the field included past Super Truck Showdown champions Kurt Pitts, (hitting an 11.18/124.21 in his gun-metal grey Lethal 1320.com ‘93 421-inch S-10 in one of his last events before shipping off for duty in Afghanistan), and Jeff Fritz, (whose blue-flamed/grey supercharged ’01 Ford Lightning clocked a best-ever 12.10 at a huge 119.03 mph).

As mentioned earlier, McNeish made the fairly unusual decision to race in both the Street Car Shootout and the Super Truck Showdown in order to get a handle on the truck’s top-end problems. The trick worked when, despite a first-round loss in the SCSS, he recorded a 9.81/138.16 and quickly returned to face Brawley for the truck trophy. When the S-10 pilot fouled by a mere eighteen thousandths of a second, McNeish clicked off a 10.07 at 138.96 to score for the third time since he debuted the Silverado in late 2008.

“We really did need that extra run to figure it out“, said an elated McNeish during winner’s circle ceremonies, “because John can run nonstop 10.50s and that doesn’t leave any room for error. When we got it back in the nines, I knew we could outrun him even though we were going to have to make a pretty quick turnaround. It was definitely worth the effort!”.
