OCTOBER 6th, 2009 STREET CAR SHOOTOUT SERIES FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tim Mallicoat, Collinsville, IL 68 565 Camaro 0.266 8.782 133.32
RU Dan Saitz, Fenton, MO 87 358 Mustang 0.040 9.287 150.23

It’s official; Tim “Moose” Mallicoat has now entered uncharted territory when it comes to setting records in the Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Mallicoat’s M&M Automotive/Dale Huff Motorsports “Hellraiser” 1968 Camaro earned a record seventeenth title of the 2009 season but finally broke his own 2007 milestone of thirteen consecutive event victories with a seemingly impossible fourteenth straight win. The Collinsville, Illinois, veteran has already wrapped up a record third consecutive SCSS point championship and has more career wins, (forty-two), final round appearances, (forty-nine), and pole qualifying positions, (thirty-nine), than any driver in series history.

For the second straight week, the weather fueled record performances. Career-bests were common despite conditions not quite as potent as during the September 29th event. Slightly higher temperatures, (from 66 to 57 degrees), and a surprisingly low barometric pressure, (29.89 Hg), still resulted in a corrected elevation ranging 1264 feet above sea level to 435 feet during the final rounds. Late in the event, a stiff northwestern breeze created a substantial “chill factor” and the track temperature dropped to sixty degrees causing concern for even Mallicoat. However, those who were able to tune their machines, (and launch techniques), to the conditions were rewarded with exceptional efforts.

Mallicoat’s naturally-aspirated 565-cubic inch Chevy took the low qualifying position in the very first available session with a solid clocking of 8.63 seconds, 155.90 miles per hour. The biggest surprise, however, came from SCSS regular Ray Arthur, whose R&R Towing-sponsored “Suspicion” ‘67 Camaro had posted a near-best 9.04/150.38 only one week earlier. Near the end of the first qualifying period, Arthur’s nitrous oxide-aided 496-cubic inch Chevy launched from the starting line in its characteristic four-feet-high wheelstand and charged to its first eight-second pass, a brilliant 8.91/152.59! Also of note was the 9.00/146.40 blast produced by SCSS Truck Elapsed Time and Speed Record Holder Kevin Autenrieth, whose orange 434-inch nitrous smallblock S-10 pickup covered the first sixty feet in an astonishing 1.251 seconds on the pass using D.O.T. rear tires!

In fact, those three runs retained a stranglehold on the first three positions within the Super Sixteen field throughout qualifying, A battle raged for the final berth in eliminations, however; no less than four more machines hit nine-second passes in the final session. Dan Saitz, the intrepid owner of Hyperformance Motorsports who competed in his first SCSS final round on September 22nd, clocked a best-ever 9.32/149.88 during the first session but was threatened by the return of Daryl “Dirty D” Jauernig. A six-time finalist whose first series win came during the sixth SCSS race ever contested, (June 1st, 2004), Jauernig, (pronounced “Journey”), had been testing his newest smallblock Ford-powered Mustang on slicks but swapped to the required D.O.T. rubber for his official return to the series. The ’88 coupe’s first effort resulted in massive amounts of tire spin but Jauernig recovered to post a 9.51 at a blazing 157.69 mph.

In the second qualifying session, Saitz’s turbocharged 358-inch Windsor-powered ’87 Mustang improved again to a best-yet 9.25 at 150.25, putting the pressure on Jauernig’s run on the final pass of the final qualifying period. Jauernig’s Ford powered into three different wheelstands, (the last of which occurred more than three hundred feet downtrack!), but Jauernig deftly drove out of the air to land with a 9.30 at an amazing 166.72 miles per hour! Jauernig was in the staging lanes prepared for another qualifying attempt when a massive oildown cancelled a third qualifying session but he vowed to return for the remaining 2009 SCSS events.

All four qualifiers made the call to report in front of the main grandstands for eliminations. Autenrieth elected to compete in both the SCSS and the Super Truck Showdown for the second straight week and, for the second time in eight days, faced Mallicoat in the opening match! Mallicoat gained an advantage of more than a tenth of a second at the start and drove to an early shut-off 8.65/149.43 win; his 1000-feet numbers indicated an 8.61/156 run was probable. Autenrieth’s losing 9.11/144.09, however, was precipitated by another exceptional 1.255-second “sixty”. In the other half of the semi-finals, Arthur grabbed a huge holeshot of fourteen hundredths of second over Saitz’s lone Ford but the Camaro headed for the centerline forcing Arthur to “pedal” the Chevy. Saitz moved in for the kill, passing the Camaro just beyond the 330-feet mark and heading to a 9.28 victory at a whopping 153.89 mph charge ahead of Arthur’s 9.63/145.83.

“There’s a reason it picked up three miles per hour”, laughed Saitz as he prepared for his second final round against Mallicoat. “Last time out, we were running way too fat in the fuel mixture and, tonight, I decided to lean it out a little on each run. The first two runs, at 149 and 150 mph, were just about right. The 153 mph pass was an example of it being way too lean; it was killin’ itself down there! That’s why I experiment on my own car and not the cars of my customers!”. In a rematch of the September 22nd championship bout, Saitz grabbed his own massive holeshot, (more than two tenths of a second!), but the fabled black Camaro made up the difference quickly with a great 1.258-second “sixty” en route to another shut-off run of 8.78/133.32. While Mallicoat’s progressive numbers were identical to his semi-final run, Saitz was also within thousandths of a second of his previous pass all the way down the track, recording another 9.28 at a “safe” 150.23 mph.

“I just didn’t fell comfortable driving it all the way to the finish line during eliminations tonight”, said Mallicoat during winner’s circle ceremonies in front of the main grandstands. “The track temperature was dropping so fast and I was worried about that big oildown which happened in the right lane. I decided to stay on the right side because the starting line was working so well over there but I thought I’d just better be safe and shut ‘er down when I knew I was ahead far enough. I know the track crew worked hard to get the track back in shape but, when it’s cold out, it’s hard for the track to really come back. When you’re running 8.60s, it’s just not a good idea to take chances when you don’t need to”.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: …Nobody questioned the power of Daryl Jauernig‘s newest Mustang. Running on slicks last month, Jauernig blasted to an 8.41 and had hoped for a similar performance on D.O.T. tires but the three-time SCSS event winner knew the track temperature was his toughest opponent. “It‘s rough when the air‘s this good but the track‘s getting colder by the minute“, said “Dirty D“. After qualifying ended, Daryl made a late timed trial, (again on-and-off the throttle), and improved to a 9.11/146.13. Jauernig’s two qualifying attempts did make him the twenty-fifth member of the 150 MPH Club and the ninth member of the 160 MPH club, though…Curtis Paulfrey’s Winner’s Circle Tire and Auto 502-inch naturally-aspirated ’68 Camaro couldn’t take advantage of the conditions with a best of 10.10/133.88 but, simply by qualifying for the Super Sixteen, he remained ahead of Ray Arthur in second place in the 2009 SCSS Point Standings…Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert blasted out a best-ever 10.70 on eight inch-wide rubber to qualify his nitrous-aided smallblock Ford-powered ’66 Mustang coupe but a 129.12 mph speed assured his search for a 130 mph pass would continue next week…It was a big night for St. Louis firefighters. Boschert got his nickname when he handled the “ladder truck” for Firehouse No. 28 but has since advanced to the “pumper” rig. The chief of Firehouse 28, Darryl Reece, qualified his maroon 396-inch ’68 Camaro for the third time this season at 11.06/125.25 but got his first ten-second timeslip during late timed trials after qualifying concluded, hitting a great 10.91/123.61...Drew Belchik ran more than a half-second quicker than his previous career-best with his 346-inch 2002 Trans Am by qualifying with a stout 11.53. His 122.33 mph speed made him the 248th member of the 120 MPH Club, joining right after Reece…David Kelly earned his first “Fastest Street Car” qualifier decal by pushing his small block ‘69 Camaro into the show at a best-ever 11.66/111.44...MoPar terror Kevin Baustian put his 2009 Challenger into the show for the second straight week with an 11.73/116.67 and ran an 11.71/116.25 during late timed trials…Isaac St. Clair arrived late for the second week in a row but made a late timed trial in his MD Performance 406-inch ‘72 Chevelle at 10.76/125.02...Nick Wren also got his first “ten” in late timed trials when he ‘78 383 Nova reeled off a 10.99/125.00...Bo Peebles‘ magnificent blue Hyperformance Motorsports-backed ‘69 Dodge Charger spent the night making NHRA Competition License runs; the twin-turbocharged 500-inch wedge MoPar ended the event with a best-ever 9.02/155.06! “Tur/Bo” plans to return to SCSS competition next week…Dan Holder, the owner of St. Louis’ fabled Wise Speed Shop, elected not to compete in the SCSS and, instead, concentrate on honing his Pro Start expertise in anticipation of the Outlaw All Stars season finale on November 1st. Holder‘s wild supercharged 540-inch ‘81 Camaro Z28 thundered to a career-best 9.00/154.47. Full details for the Outlaw All Stars can be found HEREThere are only two more SCSS events remaining on the 2009 schedule.

OCTOBER 6th, 2009 STLSR.COM SPORT TUNER SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Tony Shoaff, Mechanicsburg, IL 87 231 Regal 0.207 10.008 138.90
RU Craig Powell, St. Louis, MO 87 231 Regal 0.343 12.119 111.42

Although his only other appearance in 2009 was a mid-summer test session during which he was running on slicks, Tony Shoaff vowed to return before the end of the season for competition in the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. The pilot of the “Atomic Grand National“ which became the first nine-second six-cylinder entry fifty-three weeks ago while winning his second STSS title, made good on his promise and left the fans with nothing but respect for his gold Buick.

Shoaff made the trip from Mechanicsburg, Illinois, (just east of Springfield), despite a tenuous weather forecast but surprised even himself when his 70mm turbo’d Regal spun its tires furiously on its very first effort. Undaunted, Shoaff “pedaled” the Buick and recovered to a 10.36 while breaking his own fifty-one week-old 136.69 mph SCSS Six Cylinder Speed Record at 137.99 miles per hour! Tony returned in the final qualifying session to hook up solidly, (1.49-second “sixty”), and destroy his still-standing 9.84-second ET Record from October 14th, 2008, by screaming to a 9.66 at 139.63 mph!

Ironically, the second-fastest qualifier was also in a turbocharged V6 Regal. Craig Powell’s ‘87 T-Type, which earned its first Sport Tuner victory on September 15th, couldn’t match its eleven-second performance from that event but did clock a best of 12.09/110.81. Powell was followed by twelve-time 2009 STSS finalist Dan Harris and his nitrous-aided 232-inch V6 “Six Bang ‘Stang”, (an off-pace 12.77/106.77), September 22nd runner-up Paul Weishaar’s black All-Wheel-Drive six-cylinder 2004 BMW 135i, (also off-pace at 13.15/106.97), and Brian Smith’s red turbo’d six-cylinder 2007 BMW 335i, (a best-ever 13.24/106.71). It was the second consecutive event in which six-bangers swept the top five qualifying positions.

Of note was a rare appearance by the winningest Sport Tuner Showdown competitor ever, eleven-time titlist Adam Corbitt, whose Corbitt Brothers/Polk Audio/Dub Werks turbocharged ‘85 Volkswagen Golf Gti continued to suffer drivetrain problems. The current SCSS Front-Wheel-Drive Record Holder never made a full pass during qualifying.

The title bout was actually a battle of competing turbocharger manufacturers. Shoaff races with a 70mm unit from Precision Turbo while Powell utilizes a substantially smaller T49 compressor from Dan Saitz’s Hyperformance Motorsports. Powell, whose team once again consisted of father and crewchief, Jack, pleaded for mercy with Powell as they prepared their machines in front of the main grandstands. “How about a head start?“, shouted Powell to Shoaff. “We only need about three seconds worth!”. In fact, Shoaff got the holeshot and motored to a 10.00/138.90 to stop Powell’s 12.11/111.42.

“It spun a little again in the final but that’s okay!”, said a smiling Shoaff during trophy presentations. “It may be the valve springs are getting weaker, too, but to get back to Gateway and to reset the records again makes me pretty happy with result. I have ton of people to thank for the way this thing’s running, too. The folks at Performance Transmissions in Clinton, Illinois, and Steve at Pat’s Performance Converters in Folsom, Pennsylvania, have always been a huge help. The same goes for ‘Full Throttle’ Bob Bailey, Dan Strezo and the gang at DLS Engine Development, Colton’s Performance, the guys at Turbo Buick.com and, of course, my mom, Sue Tapscott. I have to thank my dad, too…and my wife, Amy, who couldn‘t be here tonight. We‘ll be back, though. I think we can get a 140 mph pass out of it before the end of the year!”.

OCTOBER 6th, 2009 GATEWAYRACEWAY.COM SUPER TRUCK SHOWDOWN FINAL ROUND

Pos Name Hometown ST Vehicle R.T. ET MPH

W Kevin Autenrieth, Bethalto, IL 91 434 S-10 0.384 9.056 147.01
RU Pat McNeish, Granite City, IL 86 555 Silverado 0.088 9.681 137.06

The first driver to run under nine seconds and over 150 miles per hour in the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown is on a streak but he‘s starting to upset his opponents. Kevin Autenrieth may have won his fourth title in five events at the wheel of his Lowe Performance 434-inch nitrous oxide-injected smallblock Chevy-powered S-10 pickup but he may be pushing other competitors to even stronger performances.

It wasn‘t the 9.00/146.40 blast to qualify ahead of all other trucks which drew amazement but the phenomenal 1.251-second sixty-feet elapsed time and perfectly smooth wheelstands which had the other hopefuls shaking the heads. Another 1.255 “sixty” came up when Autenrieth elected to use the first round of SCSS eliminations as a 9.11/144.09 test run for the tune-up used in the Super Truck Showdown final round.

Even though two-time 2009 Showdown winner Pat McNeish’s Performance Parts Plus-sponsored 555-inch ‘86 Silverado pickup recorded another career-best at the event, a 9.65/138.86 for the second spot, it was obvious McNeish needed more. The rest of the Top Five produced another amazingly quick Super Truck field and included four-time 2009 winner Don Moore in Randy Morgan’s 355-inch ‘91 S-10, (a best-ever 10.81/121.57 for the new truck), newcomer Ron Grzywacz at the wheel of Ray Arthur’s 355-powered “S-10 Revenge”, (an 11.41 at only 102 mph followed by a late timed trial of 10.92/121.68), and Ted Mayhue’s unique little 1982 Dodge D50 pickup with 360-inch Dodge wedge power, (a best-ever 11.87/114.83).

When Autenrieth staged up against McNeish for the trophy dash, McNeish grabbed a monstrous holeshot of three tenths of a second and held the S-10 at bay until just before halftrack. Autenrieth charged on with a 9.05/147.01 shot to stop the Silverado’s 9.68/137.06. “We’re really getting the truck to launch well but I think there’s more to be had. We backed off on the nitrous and it actually helped the truck get off the starting line but, now, we may be able to start hitting it a bit harder”. It was McNeish, howewer, who hinted that Autenrieth may, indeed, need more power. “We’ve spent the past month sorting out a new converter”, said McNeish as he collected his second straight runner-up trophy, “and, tonight, we worked on new jets. Those both stepped the truck up but I think we’re going to have to go a bit farther than that. Next week, we bring the ’spray’. It seems to be the only way we’re gonna beat that orange thing!”.
