These results reflect the record holders, qualifiers, and final round contestants at each of the
SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series events held each Tuesday at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

Tuesday SCSS Track Records can be set during official qualifying or championship rounds. The
Official Street Car Shootout qualifying period begins at 6:30 PM and concludes at 9:00 PM, (barring unforeseen circumstances). At 9:20 PM, the four quickest qualifiers meet in no-handicap eliminations with the championship final round held at 9:45 PM. Each of the Top 16 qualifiers receives a "Fastest Street Car Qualifier" decal. The SCSS trophies and decals are presented by SX Performance Fuel Systems. Additionally, the two quickest Sport Tuner drivers, (open to all passenger cars except Rear-Wheel-Drive vehicles with engines of six cylinders or more), also meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by St. Louis Street Racers.com and the two quickest Super Truck drivers, (open to all trucks and utility vehicles), meet in a no-handicap championship round for trophies presented by Gateway Raceway.com. All finalists in all categories also receive free digital images from the event courtesy of Bret Kepner Photos.com and one free entry to a future SCSS event.

For the second week in a row, Mother Nature derailed what appeared to be another tremendous event in the SX Performance Street Car Shootout Series at Gateway International Raceway. Despite truly horrific atmospheric conditions for October, a surprising number of career-best performances produced a strong Super Sixteen field but, with less than fifteen minutes remaining in the official qualifying period, an approaching cold front sent a not-unexpected intermittent drizzle to the St. Louis area and quickly ended the event. Although the front eventually brought plenty of lightning in the area, it was the report that a tornado had touched down in nearby Troy, Missouri, which hastened the decision to cancel the meet.

The corrected elevation never dropped below two thousand feet above sea level in warm and muggy conditions yet many drivers were able to decipher a relatively tricky starting line to clock their best runs ever. The most notable came from Adam Corbitt, who reset both ends of the SCSS Front-Wheel-Drive track records with his ‘86 Vokswagen Golf Gti.

The sudden end of competition also left a mystery unsolved for recently-crowned 2007 SCSS Season Champion Tim “Moose” Mallicoat. For the second time in seven days, Mallicoat was not the quickest qualifier when the race was halted. Mallicoat, who had earned a record fourteen of seventeen pole qualifying positions during the season, clocked a best of 8.73 seconds at 157.04 miles per hour with his naturally-aspirated bigblock ‘68 Camaro but was dropped to the second position by perennial SCSS standout Tony Huff, who wheeled brother Dale’s show-quality nitrous oxide-aided ’66 Chevelle to a stunning 8.72/154.21 all-time quickest pass with the help of crewchief Bill Silva.

Only five minutes before the rain began to fall, Mallicoat made another attempt to unseat Huff. In a rare miscue, Mallicoat accidentally deep-staged his “Hellraiser” Camaro and unintentionally added seven hundredths of a second to his normal 1.25-second sixty-feet elapsed time. The black Chevy never made it to the 330-feet mark under power, however, when something in the drivetrain broke and the 565-cubic inch engine’s RPM went to the moon. Mallicoat had not even returned to his trailer when the rain started to fall!

With fifteen minutes remaining in qualifying, Ray Arthur’s “Suspicion” ’67 Camaro, (9.54/142.87), and Gary Tripp’s 572-inch ’69 Camaro, (9.58/142.09), held the final two positions in the field eligible to race in eliminations.

Adnan “Otto” Omerovic once led the field in qualifying for the St. Louis Street Racing.com Sport Tuner Showdown. The HillCo Axles-sponsored turbocharged four-cylinder ‘95 Eagle Talon hit a best of 10.47 at 134.58 mph after an exceptional 1.52-second sixty-feet ET on Omerovic’s only full-throttle run in qualifying. The return of the Corbitt Brothers’ wild turbocharged two-litre Volkswagen Golf in its first event since mid-summer resulted in new FWD performance standards on every run. The Polk Audio/Wheels America VW ran 11.30/130.35, 11.15/129.92 and 11.13/130.58 to reset its own FWD track records from the June 19th event. At the time qualifying stopped, the rest of the field included Polk Audio Team racer Mike Bobelak’s 2.8-litre turbocharged ‘98 Volkswagen Gti, (a best-ever 12.28 at an amazing 121.04 mph), Adam Goldman’s black turbo ‘05 Neon SRT-4. (12.96 at a booming 117.36 mph), Nick Stepp’s ‘05 Neon SRT-4, (13.30 at a best-ever 108.58), and Jason Grubb’s ’04 SRT-4, (13.79/103.06).

Kevin Autenreith’s familiar orange ‘91 S-10 led qualifying for the GatewayRaceway.com Super Truck Showdown with several low ten-second blasts and a best of 10.22/133.18 still without the aid of nitrous oxide on its 434-inch power plant. The Lowe’s Performance pickup was followed by Allen Hannel at the wheel of Hal Marshall’s white ’86 S-10 which managed a decent 10.60/127.82 from what can still be considered a piecemeal smallblock using nitrous. At the time of the cancellation, the rest of the tough Super Truck field included Larry King’s white supercharged ‘99 Ford F-150 Lightning, (a best-ever 12.35/113.17), Al Ingram’s 572-inch “crate motored” ‘90 Silverado, (12.42/110.28), Brian Kinworthy’s white ‘71 454 C-10, (13.19 at a best-ever 103.15), and Drew Gowin’s beautiful smallblock ’91 S-10, (a career-best 13.72/98.37).

Since the rainout occurred more than two hours after the first run of the night, the event was considered complete and points were awarded for the final qualified field despite the fact that eliminations were not contested.

NOTES FROM THE SCSS: Regardless of the weather and shortened qualifying, no less than
eighteen percent of all competitors recorded career-best elapsed times, speeds, or both. A constant fifteen mile-per-hour tailwind definitely helped the speeds. Equally surprising was the fact that the Super Sixteen field was only the third in history which sported an average speed for all qualifiers above 130 miles per hour!…Gary Tripp’s 9.58/142 qualifying effort was easily the wildest of the night; the red small-tired ’69 Camaro was within inches of the wall for the second half of the run yet Tripp never once considered lifting off the throttle…Mickey Boyer parked his red ’69 Nova and took the wheel of Jack Nungester’s sleek black ’71 Camaro but dealt with tire spin issues through the event…Unheralded Quinn Grant made his first SCSS event worthwhile; his maroon 438-inch ’93 Mustang joined both the 10-Second Club and 120 MPH Club with a 10.71/126.42 on his first full pass!…Mid-Coast Performance horsepower wizard Kurt Borton earned his first SCSS “Fastest Street Car” Qualifier decal by wringing the neck of a customer’s black ’05 Mustang to an 11.91/119.29 to make the Super Sixteen field. Borton noted that MCP will once again be hosting the World’s Only Indoor Drag Racing Series again in the winter of 2007 most likely beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving and definitely to be held on Saturday afternoons. “I just can’t do that Friday night marathon thing again this year”, said Borton. Check the Mid-Coast Performance.com for details and the schedule…Don Robbins qualified his big block ‘67 Chevelle for the first time ever at 11.62/114.03 and then scattered its “Rat Motor” all over the finish line on the next pass…Faisal “The Face” Merghelani made his SCSS first appearance of the season in his eleven-second, 120 mph ’03 Z06 Corvette…Despite being in attendance at the vast majority of the eighty-four completed SCSS events since 2004, Paul Hagen finally earned a “Fastest Street Car” qualifier decal with his beautiful ’72 Nova…Steve Fehr’s 418-inch Ford-powered ’66 AC Cobra missed qualifying by twelve thousandths of a second despite a best-ever 12.12/117.48…Seven qualifiers made the Super Sixteen field for the first time ever!…The quickest of the six-cylinder entries was Scott Hart’s blindingly all-white ’87 turbo Buick Regal which also ran best-ever numbers with a 12.57 at a whopping 115.22 mph, the second fastest six-banger run of the season…”Mr. Entertainment”, Jon Bizell, finally got his FWD 3.8-litre six-cylinder Saturn Aura into the fourteen-second zone at 14.97/93.51. Why was that such a big deal for the guy who runs the St. Louis Club Grand Prix website? The Aura XR 3.6 is basically the Saturn version of the Pontiac G6 with a Grand Prix drivetrain!…After two sputtering, coughing attempts and announcer “Radical Rich” Tivitt’s suggestion for him to “jack up the radiator cap and replace everything underneath”, Greg “Hook-N-Ladder” Boschert swears he has given up trying to sort out his 10.7-second ’66 Mustang for the duration of the 2007 season. Boschert will instead devote his full attention to ending the turmoil currently enveloping the St. Louis City Fire Department. Let’s hope the Fire Department doesn’t work like a smallblock Ford…There are only TWO SX Performance Street Car Shootout events remaining on the 2007 calender!
