Just cut each tailpipe off about 2 inches from the muffler, then go buy some V8 tailpipes and hve them welded on.

Then the tips will be in the right place, you need to remember that all V8 tips are offset. If you simply add them to your tips they will sit to the right by quite a bit.

i've been on this board awhile (and firebirdv6.com) but I still don't know what you guys mean by turndown tips. WHY are they hated, what do they look like, WHAT cars were they used on? From the way people talk about them you'd think they were used on mid-90's Neons or something.

I mean, I've seen tips that angled downward a little but they didnt look bad enough for everyone to hate them, they're very subtile. i've seen worse, I've seen the quad centered (four pipes cm's apart sticking underneath the license plate) that looked a little alien-ish to me, i've see rims (not from you guys necessarily but other fbodies) that made me want to But the angled tips weren't that bad.

EDIT: nevermind, just saw a picture, They make me think of some kind of slug or something you'd find beached on a sea shore.

People are talking about the nasty what quickly become brown turndowns that GM stupidly put on fourth gens after everyone hated them on third gens. Anyway go with the take of muffler from hawks or SLP. I have A WS6 take off muffler and i am very pleased with the look and sound of it. The only thing is that if you look the right tail pipe while standing behind the car you will notice it does not stick out as far as the left. It is like this on all cars even new ones. It is only off by about less than a quarter of an inch and isnt real noticable. It is more noticeably on cars that do not have the rear cut in the bumper for the tips. I have seen this problem occur most on cars with the 5.5" oval tips. I am told it is due to the fact that a company called lansing makes some of the exhaust componnets.

i think people hate the turn down tail pipes cause it SREAMS OUT "i'm a six" not that we dont like being a six, we just dont want people to think that we are weak stock 6es. we like to be weak modded 6es
just my opinion.

if you are worried about them turning brown, use stainless steel, if you want it to look really good go with polished stainless steel.

Turndowns do affect sound for the better however. If they are low enough, within 6" of the ground. They serve as resonators pushing the exhaust pulse down into the street which reverberates outwards. On a lot of Hot Rods you'll see a set of mufflers that go into turn downs - dumped just after the axle, making the exhaust very short, and very loud. Because the sound hits the street it does give you that 'ground pounder' sound. Just not quite the affect of open headers.

I think I've got a better exhaust system lay-out, that I'm going to run one of these days. I'll show you Saturday if you got jacks. I planned on bringing over my Polyurethane Transmission mount and slap that in while we're there as a small mod-fest???
