Twin turbo custome setup......is it possible?

Its like 12:30 @ night now, I cant sleep, so what else is there to do but think of crazy ways to make my car faster.

I was thinking about a twin turbo setup, running a turbo off of each cylinder bank. I mean take the headers from each to a turbo, through an intercooler and into the throttle body. Each turbo would have its own airbox on opposite sides fo the engine bay before the piping came together before the intercooler. Each turbo would also have its own exhaust pipe, meaning no Y-pipe, or a true dual set-up.

Would this work as well, better, or worse then a single turbo?

it would definitely work!you just have to make sure that everything is damn near perfect, thats all. it will take up a little more space in the engine compartment though. good luck

Im looking at it this way, if a 1.7L civic can spin a turbo, then both my cylinder banks can spin one up. I don't want to put out too much boost, 10 should be enough because i am also doing cam and head work. Thanks for the feedback, ill let you know whats going on with my project, if it materializes.

w3rd , im thinking of the same thing for my car after the cam gets in and all the internals have been cleaned up. yeah a small turbo say a T-02 would be nice, but hard to find, but if oyu have a lot of internal work, a t-25 would be great and they are easy to find on DSM's. if my project does materialize i'll take lots of pictures

I've thought of it before too...having two extra turbos sitting in your room will do that to you.

Wink

With enough dough many things are possible.

Good luck!

yo JC93Z, hows that project coming... Id definately be interested in seeing more step by step pictures if you are willing to share. I been dreaming of doing something like that myself, but until I get out of college and get me a job, its gonna have to stay a dream...

the whole problem with the twin tubo setup is setup is space to power ratio. using a single turbo is plenty for our cars, lok at tiago's car. her uses a single turbo and has great luck. for ur setup, i dont think you would be happy with the work that u have to do to make a twin turbo setup work.

Personally I think a twin setup woudl be better, shorter down pipe, and shorter headers form the exhaust ports...

I have figured a way that would be possible to do, I jsut cannot hink of a way to inner cool it.

I thought of maybe doing a inner cooler on the top of hte motor, and use something like an SS hood, but I don't see that making clearance and the plumbing woudl probable make it unsuable.

Thats what I was thinking exactly, mustangeater. The piping would be simpler than on a single turbo setup, even though there would be more of it. I was thinking a front mount intercooler would work just fine if fabbed up correctly and intelligently.

It is coming slowly but surely..... What other pictures would you like to see and I can get them taken for you. What is up on the website right now is about as far as we have got. When I first planned to do these twin turbo it was going to be on my LT-1 so I bought collectors for 1 5/8" and a 4 tube collector. The major thing was turning that into a 1 1/2" and a 3 tube collector. We have gotten that far now we have to make an adapter to go into a 2 1/2" flange.

About the intercooler, I am going to buy a 2 1/2" inlet (twin) into a 3" outlet. And take the 2 1/2" tubes from the turbo into the y-pipe and then take a single 3" into the FMIC intercooler. Then on the other side take another 3" outlet from the intercooler to the throttlebody. Simple enough.

EDIT* Here is a pic of the mock up intercooler.

jc93z, are you going to run a dump from the turbos? or are you going to use a full exhaust? i am having troubles with the d-pipe location and could use some advise!also, how much cutting did you have to do on that bumper to get thefmic to fit?
