trans question for future

A question for the future of my VERY slow Camaro rebuild.
Should I rebuild my auto to be strong and fast or replace with a five speed with the goods?
I hope to do a little of both drag and autocross when the car is finished.

Thanks for all the help.

I don't know why but it is a lot harder to put a manual in a auto then put a auto in a manual. It would probably be cheaper and easier to keep the auto.

When gettin my shift kit in I got to talkin w/ the trans guy about beefin up the L60E,he replied"that tranny will take anything that v6 will dish out not neccisary" handles like close to 300hp before thinking of beefin it up.

Stock tranny sucks. Even if you're stock and just beating on it every now and then, you risk breaking it. I suggest a mild build up with stronger clutches and more of them, stronger bands and bigger servos, etc.

95% of what I build is the 700R4/4L60E, (from mid 13's to the mid 10's) what are you wanting to do exactly? Maybe, I can be of help?

hmm... wonder how a shift kit woudl act at an autocross....

Jsut to warn you 5-speed is a pile of hourse dung! Its great when its not broken...

My 5-speed experience...

4th clutch
rebuitl tranny
2nd driveshaft
2nd rear end
and currently I am having what is believed to be internal synchros damage.

I've raced mine for all of its 125,000 miles and I am still on all the stock equipment, including stock clutch. Sounds like driver error and not part failure. The T-5 is rated to handle over 250-275 Ft-lbs of torque in a stock build. Performance rebuilds will sustain near 1,000 horsepower.
