Starting Problems
 

Hi, everybody, newbie to the forums here (and newbie Camaro owner, too).

I have a 1995 Base model, 3.4L V6, manual transmission. For the last couple of weeks, i have had problems with it starting. Sometimes I would turn the key and all the indicator lights would come on, but it would not turn over . . . there was nothing. I could wait a few seconds and try again and it would fire right up. Also a couple of times while driving it, it would just die. I changed the fuel filter and it would start, but I was still having the same problems with intermittent starting. Today I replaced the ignition switch down low on the steering column and now it won't even turn over at all. I am still getting indicator lights, but no matter how many times I try it won't start. Any help on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

You need to check the "starter" output pin on the ignition switch to see if you have 12 volts with the switch in the "START" position.

Note that if you have 12 volts at the pin on the ignition switch, that circuit goes through the theft deterrent relay and the clutch interlock switch, either of which can prevent the starter from being powered.

Problem seems to have been solved. Many thanks to Injuneer for the link to the factory service manual. Today I dropped the steering column again, unplugged everything, disconnected the dimmer switch and ignition switch. Apparently, when I put everything back together yesterday, I didn't put in the rear bolt to connect the switches to the column and didn't tighten the other two done enough. This was causing the whole assembly to move and not allowing the actuator rod to do its job. I got that third bolt in, tightened everything down, reconnected everything and it fired up just like it's supposed to. Long story short: this is what is known as "user error" :)

I can see that service manul coming in really handy in the future.
