The Smog Nazi's strike again!

Went to get my car smogged today as people in California are used to doing every other year for registration here. Come to find out cali. just lowered the NO (PPM) max from 700 something to 424 this week (i never got that letter?!?). Max can probably fill in the exact #'s here

Failed the first time @ 484 :mad:

I knew the guy, so he told me to get some higher octane gas and we'd try again. Well, I go down to chevron and some dumb b!tch decides she's too good to wait in line @ the tanks anymore and backs into me :cry:
So now I'm really mad!

Anyways I go back after dealing w/ that and test again.

Squeaked by @ 422, the max being 424 PPM :cool:

Now my car's exhaust isn't exactly stock eaither so I was expecting alittle higher but this was too close. The guy said he had to downshift the car to get it to pass. My car is currently equiped w/ CIA header, a Random Tech cat, and a SpinTech muffler. I also relised, when he told me he had to downshift the car, that I swapped in a TA rear (3.08 > 3.42) some time ago and I never updated the computer so the shift points are probably f'ed up too.

Here's the whole test result for anyone who's good at breaking down the numbers. Max : Results

@15MPH & 1727 RPM
%CO2 = 15 / %O2 = 0 / HC = 52:50 / CO% = .49:.06 / NO = 424:422

@25MPH & 2008 RPM
%C02 = 15 / %O2 = 0 / HC = 36:31 / CO% = .46:.04 / NO = 711:243

Now why are my HC and NO so high yet the CO is well under?

The guy said it might be the EGR cloged, any other ideas?

The moral of this story is, don't wait untill next week when it comes to smogging stuff and living in california. I really need to move to one of those smogless cities in riverside county already :rolleyes:

Ehh...Mike those numbers aren't good.

A car like yours should 0-0-0 as readings....

Egr??? Yeah..maybe.
But more than likely its been a bit rich.........which has carboned the combustion chambers, raising your compression ratio.........therefore increasing NoX.

But the high HC is a sign of a mis-fire....which can cause NoX.......but the O2 content is zero.........it makes no sense.

Pull the plugs.......and see if they are black or white........that will tell you alot.

More than likely his machine is FUBAR..........cause those numbers don't really go together.

As for the Smog People in Sacramento.........they don't tell anyone a thing.........they just do it........and figure what happens after all.

Bottom line is you passed:)

Intresting. I guess it's about that time to change my plugs anyways so I'll see what they look like.

I doubt that guys machine had any problems because he's a smog only tech and I'd assume that it'd be more accurate than say an arco station.

I'll also check my Auto Xray to see if I have any missfires or anything but I'd asssume my O2 content would be higher if I did.

Thanks for the breakdown.

Is the truck going to be ready for the 18th?
