So a new 335i Commands some Respect! (Some...)

I had to do some googling when I got home, I had no idea a 335i was as fast as this.

My '97 SS is mostly stock... exhaust, programming, 4.10 gears... might be a high 13 second car on a good day, but tires are almost bald (again) so maybe not...

Anyway it was a neck-and-neck traction(less) battle off the line for both of us, both cars squirming around til the top of 2nd gear... he pulled about half a length on me through 3rd gear, and then when I hit 4th I pulled ahead and continued to slowly walk away.

Raced twice exactly the same results each time.

I have to wonder if he backed off now that I do some research, it's a 300hp twin turbo I6, I'd think it'd really shine once it got hooked to the road and spun those turbos up...

Maybe he was just a wuss and backed off?

Good race anyway. If I spent that kind of money on a car though I'd hate to get essentially the same performance as a 12 year old Camaro...

Stock they're good for mid-low 13s and 105-106 mph. Most people who buy them and drive them like that will also do a quick ECU tune and trap 112+ mph. Cubic dollars = speed!

With under $1000.00 in easy to install modifications, these cars are in the 11s with trap speeds of almost 120mph in the quarter mile.. A $500 Juice Box chip adds 80 horsepower to the wheels along with 80 foot pounds of torque and a dual cone intake adds another 15 to the wheels.. That's a whole lot of power for a small car...

While that it true, the same can be said about a number of cars out there today.

No, you made a point that a car could hit 11's with 1000 dollars in mods. Well look at the price of a 335i and then look at cars in it's price category. A base corvette can hit 11's with just a set of sticky tires. And that's naturally aspirated.

Oh, true.. I just expect that kind of thing out of a Corvette.. A non "M" 3-Series BMW just really surprises me. It's the whole sleeper thing that has me impressed with the 335i. Back in the early 90s I had my first sleeper - a 1986 Camaro RS with a 1987 Corvette drive train. That was a whole lot of fun. For a 335i to be faster than a 370Z and about even with a new Camaro SS out of the showroom - I'm just very surprised...

X2 that the 335i is a sleeper of sorts! When I pulled up behind him (He was at the light before I got there) I hardly noticed the car, plain white 3-series, easily could have mistaken it for a 318 or other nondescript... Then though as I pulled along side I noticed the big (gawdy) wheels, and thought it was actually kinda funny to put such big wheels on a car that probably couldn't have turned over the stockers let alone big ones... But then at 'GO' time, those big wheels spun over right quick!

We were both severely traction limited off the go...

Yeah, anything with forced induction will do that for you though. I'm excited to see Ford's next step with it ecoboost twin turbo V6. I know they've got to be using limited amounts of boots because the ecoboost engine is in the upper 200 range NA and it's only 365 TT. I think they can do better.

Yeah, I have a feeling that TT engine will find it's way into the Mustang eventually. There will be a nice aftermarket for the Ford turbo cars. I wonder how the Lincoln MKS TT will turn out.
