'70Firebird vs '00 V6 Camaro

Okay, so just to give you a quick background of this story...I have a 1970 Formula 400 Firebird (400 V8) some guy from school has a 2000, or a 2001 V6 Camaro. My Firebird is a 3speed automatic with OD...he has a 5 speed in his Camaro.

We aren't really friends, but we hang out sometimes at school because I hang out with some of the same people he hangs out with, anyways...He is one of those story tellers, you know the type...everyday he has a new and exciting story, about some guy who tried robbing him but he kicked their *** or his dad used to be a sniper in the army or how he beat a modded V8 or anything like that.

So he keeps saying his car could take mine no problem. I'm like "wait a minute? How can you even begin to think a completely stock 2000 V6 camaro can take a 1970 Formula Firebird that has a big 400 V8, with exhaust and headers?" His answer: "because mine is a stick"

This pisses me off, because it's common sense...at least I thought it was that whether you have a stick or not, if you have a V6 stock camaro going up against a big 400 formula firebird with exhaust and headers, there is no way you can win...not to mention, if anything Id say the automatics can get out to a faster start from the line. anyways he keeps insisting, no I can beat you because mine is a stick...your's is an automatic so its slow...ummm yea okay whatever.

I see him at one night so I start catching up to him and we pull up to a light...its completely deserted its around 1am or so and I'm like okay so let's finally see if your car can take mine, like you tell everyone it can. He's like "umm well okay whatever" So the light turns green, I immediately get the jump on his ***, I'm doing about 30 and have already pulled ahead about 1 to 1 1/2 car lengths...I keep the pedal mashed down until I hit about 80 or so, I murdered him big time, I kept pulling away from him from 30mph until I shut down around 80mph.

We hit another light and I look at him and I'm like "okay so all I want is for you to finally admit that your car got smoked and I can take you easily" and he is like "well, okay I admit it" and I'm like "good, later" and we go our separate ways.

I go to school the next day and see him with about 5 or 6 people that I hang out with too and I go up to him and I'm like so why don't you tell them what happened last night when we raced. And I turn to all the other guys around him and I'm like, "we raced last night and I smoked him" To my shock he is like "yea you smoked me ya know why?" and he proceeded to tell everyone there that right when the light turned green and we both took off, all of a sudden a car coming from the opposite way ran a red light and would have hit him if he didn't slam on his brakes"

I stood there and couldn't believe that he actually lied like that, saying he slammed on his brakes to avoid a car that ran a red light. Yea, BS. I was there, it was 1am there were no cars out I'm pretty sure I would have seen that supposed "car" coming if it was really there.

anyways just wanted to share...I really hate people who can't admit when they lose, especially people like him who have a story and a lie for everything.

That guy is a total and complete moron. It pisses me off to read about his ignorance; I can't imagine what its like to be there in person. I feel your pain; a guy I knew tried to tell me there is no such thing as a torque converter, People like that need to be on an island by themselves!!

Why don't you get some of your mutual friends together and either get him to meet you somewhere or trick him into meeting you somewhere and run him again. Heck run him a few times any way he wants to run, leave it all up to him so there's no excuses. This time you'll have witnesess to back it up. That'll shut him up. If he won't run just use that against him. Be like "c'mon you afraid I'll beat you like before, or afraid an invisible car is gonna run a redlight again? etc. etc." I know it's bad practice to antagonize someone just because they don't wanna race, but it sounds like this guy deserves it. Nice kill btw

nice kill guy does sound like a moron like said get another race with others see how it goes...

but you do have to admit a carbed small block, can be insanely fast or one hell of a dog... but you have to assume one as old as a 70 will be able to take a v6

You know what? I tried doing that...I tried setting up a race where he could have one of his friends in his car, Id have one of my friends in my car and maybe even a possible "trail car" to video it. You know what he says? "No, why would I even waste my gas?" I'm like "are you serious!!!" I'm like "if you won't race then that just proves to everyone that we already know what the outcome will be and your V6 will go down...he's like "I know I can smoke you so I don't need to race you"

It pisses me off to no end! But I guess you gotta deal with people like that sometime right?

if you know someone makes up excuses, you have to throw out the line...

Before you say its a waste of your gas, I will fill your tank if you win the race, and give you $20 on top of it. If I win, just admit you lost.

so everyone will know he is scared if he turns it down.

Good idea. Although I don't see him anymore. This was last year when I was a senior in highschool...I was just remembering that race because I saw one of his friends today. Anyways, I guess since we graduated he's moved off and gone into the Navy or the Air Force or something. Oh well.

My 80 is a 400 transplant.It had stock intake,600 edelbrock and
2 and 1/4 inch dual exhuast no cats and think mild cam.Slight lope.

First track race with car was against a newer v6 firebird 98 or so.

I was rookie at the track and buddy was driving my car and I was allowed to be a passenger.Buddy who never misses a shift in his six speed ls1 went from 1st to third in my auto 80 which does run faster if manually shifted.
The v6 went 16.5 and my 400 went 15.0.I still crushed him even missing a gear.Usually the car went 14.8 or so and now after a 2400 stall and 3.42 gears instead of stock 3.08 it goes high 13s very low 14s on street tires.Thats faster than most of the third gens around here. And basically on par with the near stock lt1s.

I think the old 400 were pretty underrated and they didn have lots of torque.Only a few mods like opened up dual exhaust and stuff and they really start to peform well.

And you should shift your auto manually at around 5000 rpm.It should be way way faster than if you let the tranny shift. Those older trannies shift way way too low for best times.

I have a few people very similar to your guy. They have no clue about cars or hp.I had one guy who insisted his gta was faster than my six speed ls1 with a some mods. His gta was gone stock.
Another buddy with newer monte who was sure its faster and its near stock to my slightly modded lt1 and another buddy who thouugh his turbo older subaru or his couple of stock 5.0s were a match for the 80.Forget it they all lost .It was fun.Well the gta guy wouldn't race he just liked to shoot off his mouth..

The other guys at least ran me and found out the hard way.But on the street anything can and does happen and the fastest car often loses the race.Especially with standards they make lousy race cars. You can short shift ,miss a shift, hit the rev limiter..hit the wrong gear..etc..Autos rule for drag racing.!!
