Well I have a 150,000 miles on the orginal sturts and felt it was time to replace them. It wasn't floating or anything but man 150,000 miles on factory sturst just seemed way to long. So last night I took the passenger side off, compressed the spring and cut the nut off because the nut was so rusty that the hex shape fell right off as soon as it saw the impact gun getting close. But to my surprise when I did get the nut off I could release the srping and the cap still didn't pop off. So a few hours of beating cutting prying and leaving the spring loose finally popped the top off but the steel sleeve that went through the sprting prech is still attached to the strut along with the bump stop. I don't really want to take the torch to this to get it off because the bump stop is reusable is rubber. But it doesn't look like I am going to be able to save any of these parts.

SO I think I need a new upper spring perch and a bump stop for both sides. Haven't taken the drivers side apart but I can only imagine how much rust is on that side. Does anyone know the part numbers for these two pieces if they are the same for each side otherwise I probably need two different part numbers for the upper spring perches and one for the bump stop.

There are two different upper spring mounts - left and right. Check Shoebox's Tech Pages. He has hundreds of part #'s. If the steel sleeve is ripped out of the mount, you can't salvage it. Needs to be replaced.

Not sure about the jounce bumper part #'s... I managed to salvage mine. You can just cut right through the shock shaft. Minor point.... the fronts are "coil-over shocks", not struts.

A torch will cut the shaft, but only an abrasive cutoff wheel or abrasive saws-all blade will touch the shaft. It is very hard.

1 Question: If they are truely coil over shocks then why does my service manual and the auto parts store list them as struts? I was always under the impression that it was a modfied strut design where it uses a strut type damper but does not use the strut as a supporting memeber the upright.

If it isn't used as a "supporting member".... as in the 3rd Gens, by definition it is not a strut.
