not as obvious of a question as the title leads, at least i think.


washed my car yesturday and then rotated the tires. i noticed on the drivers front rotor only there are tiny cracks pretty much the entire way around the rotor, right about in the middle of where the pads contact.

interesting thing is that after i put the wheel back on and went around the block the cracks were gone. we couldn't find them at all, nothing but a smooth (and now rust-free) rotor surface with no cracks.


what is going on? is this normal or is this a sign of the rotor starting to crack and it should be replaced?


these are C5 brakes on my f-body with z06 pads.

 

Whats all that smudged crap on them?

Those are stockers, throw them away and buy some good replacement blanks. Not the light cheap ones either.

 

its rust / brake dust from the car just being washed

as soon as i went around the block they were nice and clean again, but without the cracks

 

If there were no cracks after driving around the block, I'd bet there were no cracks before. I can't seen anyhting abnormal in the picture

 

Thoes are Heat cracks from overheating the rotors i see a lot of this i work on cop cars. they are junk rotors buy new
