10 bolt explosion!!!!

Well went out to Orlando SpeedWorld last night to run the sportsman class and on my first run of the day at launch my 10 bolt just exploded!!!!! Had to tow the car and now its time to get a 9 in. or a s60.

Took it apart this morning and both of the main caps in the housing cracked in half and the ring gear was in about 10 peices!!!

The car hooked like a motha and all I heard was a loud ass boom!!!!.....lol

Re: 10 bolt explosion!!!!

Lots of power will break things, and the cheapest thing to break is traction. Start hooking, and other parts will fail- in the F-bodies, the weak rear axle- GM used the correct axle for the vehicle weight but not the amount of power. Twisted driveshafts, snapped universals,- I fragged a planetary gearset in an LT1 powered Caprice with a shift kit, Eaton, and 4.10 gears once. Something's gotta give-

Yep...
The 7 5/8 rears are not the "strong ones".
Built back in the late 70's as 7.5's to handle the smog 150 hp engines...
Strange builds a bolt in 60 series Dana, that is NO "BS" strong!!!
But if you want to change gears, you will need a "housing spreader" to get the center carrier out...
So the 9 inch is the "Bong"... EZ out and in... Build it in the bench...

We will see how my 8.5 holds up on the '57 (Strange spool & 3.90 gear)
