LS1 vs. LT1

Which engine is better, the LS1 or the LT1? I love the 3rd gen body style but I hear the LT1 is nuthin compared to the LS1(not my words just what i have heard) I figured i ask the experts, so is buying the LT1 sacrificing alot of poweer when i could just get an LS1?

Not modded yes... search around you'll find plenty on this topic.

LT1 is almost as cheap to mod as a Gen I small block these days.

LS1... well, how many cubic dollars is your wallet?

A decent LS1 is gonna cost $4k+ w/o tranny. A good LT1 with a T56 will run $1500-$2000. I'd go with the cheaper LT1 and spend the extra $$ to get cam, head and intake port job, RR, and whatever else you desire!! Oh yah, don't forget to put a stroker kit on it!!!

So your saying your gonna get one of these engines and put it in a 3rd gen right? Then I say go with an LS1 with low miles and a t56 and be done with it. Doesnt take many bolt on's to reach 350rwhp with an LS1. I've seen cammed and bolt on LS1's dyno right at 400rwhp. Or you can get an LT1 and t56 for about half the price of the LS1, bolt a set of ported heads on, throw a nice cam on, keep the stock bottom end and be pushin 400rwhp also. Its all up to you. Both ways your gonna come out at about the same HP for the same amount of $$.

It's all relative to the kind of money you have to spend IMO

if i had enough money i'm sure i could get a geo metro faster than most cars on this board... its all about money and time, and requires lots of both.

the LS1 is a FAR superior engine in almost every aspect
intake, heads, ignition. get over it. cars get faster. things get better.

with that said-
do an LT1 swap.
The LS1 wont bolt up to anything
niether will the trans.
for the amount you will end up paying to actually get an LS1 in there for the actual parts and the insane amount for aftermarket parts- the LT1 is the way to go.

i'd go with a GEN I, or a TPI with alum heads and LT1 intake manifold, but thats just me

I hate these topics.

Do a search and you'll see what people think.

Obviously if you ask in the LT1 section you are gonna get guys saying they love the LT1.

I agree-
this really isn't an opinion issue

THE LS1 IS A SUPERIOR MOTOR. period. end of story.

Na for Na, the LT1 is going to have a hell of a time catching the LS1. type till your keyboards are worn out. simple as 2 + 2. doesn't matter how much you love it. type till your fingers are worn down. LS1 is more powerful and cleaner burning and has improved upon many of the LT1s weaknesses (opti? alum block ect).

cost is something you have to concider on your own

Let it be known that an Ls1 with ported heads (same cost as LT1 from phil) cam (almost same cost as LT1) and long tubes(jet hots are about the same) will romp an LT1 with the same- all day long.

it will also respond to a converter and gears much better than an LT1 because of its higher power range.

For the cost of LT1 to LS1 swap- I couldn't justify it though.

all of this being said- say you wanted a blown 383-
an Lt1 might be the way to go. Internal components for an LS1 are stupid expensive.
five years from now though, I see LS1 parts being cheaper than LT1 parts - mainly because the LT1 was only in production for 5 years or so and its not like there were that many sold
covette- limited production
F-body- only V8s(33% or so) and ****ty sales
b-body- only in a smaller percentage of them as well

Also Ls1 transmission choices might be more limited.
I dont think you can get much to bolt upto them
I know it doesn't have the traditional bolt patten

I agree with Trey. The LT1 is great but the LS1 is a perfectly engineerd motor. I have spent a lot of $$$ to run with bolt on LS1's to date.

Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Well i would go with a LT1,it will be easier to find and be cheaper not to mention easier to bolt into a third gen car,it will also bolt up to any of the gm trannies and you could go carbrated if you wanted to.As far as the LT1 vs LS1 the only fair comparasion you can make is the best gen 2 engine which is the LT4 vs the earliest LS1 engine(97) and the gap is much closer, from what i have read a 96 LT4 vett will easily run with a 97 LS1 vett.

I hate these threads also, and as far as it goes, Trey said it right, the LS1 technically is far superior to the LT1, however, there are so many factors when it comes to who would win in a race mod for mod. If the drivers are both equal, the LS1 will win, but how often is that? You get a modded LS1, and a modded LT1, and it will depend on the driver....this is all hype, and what if's, etc.... take it to the track, and see for yourself...

Why not just a ramjet 350. Basically made to drop into a 3rd gen with 350 hp tuned and ready to go. No messy wiring either.
