Head porting

Ok. I already know how this is probably going to go, but I'll ask anyway. Lol

Can most machine shops port heads? Is there anything different with the lt1 heads than most others? I know this isn't a good thing but I want to go as cheap as I can. Just looking for a little more pep. Please educate me......

Re: Head porting

I would say "NO" you need training or experience with porting. You can't just remove material and hope that they perform well. They can mill the heads and do angle valve jobs but the art of porting needs to be done by a professional.

Lloyd Elliot is the guy you want

Re: Head porting

How much "pep" are you looking for? What mods do you have now? Heads/cam is where the power is made so you are on the right track but there is no single mod that will make a big difference. The parts need to be matched with other parts for example: a big cam will make power but unless the heads are opened up along with the intake and exhaust, its useless. Opened up heads won't make real power unless a matched cam is there etc.....

As for machine shops, like everything else, there are good ones and bad ones. The LT1 heads are different from the early SBCs but milling/porting is the same technique and that's where a good machinist differs from the guy at the machine shop.

+1 for Lloyd. He matches heads/cams. Talk with him, he'll get you the pep you want.

Find some used ones. If you look hard, you can find LE's for cheap.

If you do, make sure you get the cam specs from the donor motor. Lloyd matches his heads and cam. If nothing else, get the seller's name and call Lloyd, he probably has records on them and can tell you what cam to match up with. Might want to have the intake opened up as well if you plan on putting a larger TB on the motor but again, head/cam specs will dictate what size your TB should be.
