Stripped a throttle bracket hole on intake manifold....
Guys,
At some point I stripped the lowest hole for the throttle cable bracket. I attempted to torque it to 106 lb-in and it never tightened up(the correct torque was 90 lb-in..that didn't strip it because the upper two were fine at that torque).
I'm going to pickup an M6-1 heli coil set at Autozone tomorrow.

There appears to be enough material around the hole to heli coil it. However I wanted to check here to make sure that I'm correct. Anyone had to heli coil these holes before? Just looking at the set, I don't drill the hole, just use the tap correct?

when i used a heli coil kit for my exhaust bolt holes you have to drill it out ( it tells you what size) then you have to use the "tap" to tap the treads for the insert, then use the tool to screw in the heli coil and you're all set. Works like a charm

That's what I was thinking, but I didn't see a drill bit with the set(I was thinking they would include it...maybe not). Now the only question is the amount of material around this hole. I don't want to punch through into the intake.

I ended up getting the M6-1.00 heli coil kit from Napa. There is a massive Napa hub just a mile from work, so I just went there(as opposed to Autozone where I usually go...). The kit from there seems to be a bit better too. I used two inserts and had to trim off a coil and a quarter off the second one to fit flush.
The valve cover has to come off to get the proper drill angle for the hole. I started by finding a bit that would go in the hole and from there stepped up to the finishing size of 1/4"(specified by the heli coil kit). You have to be careful because the bit can bite into the aluminum intake....and you can screw things up quickly. I started out using my dewalt drill bit set, but they have a pilot nub on the end of the bit and that just wanted to bit into the hole too much(it would bite and try to spin the drill with me...I knew things were not going to go well if I continued that mess...). I got some drill bits with a "standard" end and they worked well.
Turned out well.
Just don't rush and take your time.

i've read into it and usually people go 1/64th smaller than the bit recommend when drilling into aluminum. That what i did with my exhaust bolt hole repairs. Turns out amazing, bolt holes seem way stronger now. I only used one coil per hole though. The aluminum was really hard to drill into though!
