loud squel under the hood

Hey all, im lookin at a 95 trans am with the lt1 of course. kid said he changed the water pump cause it got hot (how hot i dunno). But now the car has a loud squeling noise when the car is running....very loud and annoying. It almost sounds as if the car is running on no oil but it does have oil and oil pressure according to the guage. also he pulled the serpintene belt off thinking maybe a pulley was makin it...no change. any ideas at all?

All but one of these was already eliminated by the OP...

Most likely would be wp bearing or optispark bearing, but you need to identify what part of the engine it's coming from first.

well...when i heard it, it almost sounded like it was coming from the back of the motor. the water pump bearing couldnt be it because when he pulled the serpentine belt off and ran it...thats eliminating power steering, alternator, water pump, and a/c...only one turning would be crank pulley. i thought maybe the opti bearing cause it was having a issue running for approx 10 mins then dying (which is a opti issue)....but i wouldnt think that bearing would be this loud.

We have no way of knowing how loud your squeal is. My opti bearing was plenty loud...

Could also be the water pump drive gear/bearing behind the timing cover.

Can you post a video clip? Even a cell-phone clip would help.

I just had a squeeling going on on my 95 camaro. I had just bought it, got it together firing it up and it was squeeling/squeeking.. badly where i had no idea what it was. Took my belts off no change, damn thing ended up being exhaust leak. Never heard my exhaust leaks ever sound like that.

Can you please explain as the WP is not driven by the belt on the LT1?

Gear driven by the timing chain my friend

Sounds like a bering to me. Drain the oil and see what you find, metal shavings, etc... Mine squelled like a pig when it spun a bearing.

waterpump isnt driven by the belt, its driven by the camshaft spline drive that sticks in the rear of the waterpump..

Only one way to get it on, and if he did it wrong it probably would be puking antifreeze all over the ground. Try listening to the pump closer as it could be the bearing in the pump?
