lt1 for lt4

I just bought a 1994 z28 with an lt1 and I know that they're basically the same motor but how easy would it be to put a lt4 in it and what kind of mods would I have to do? also, besides pulling off the oil pan, can you tell if motor is a 4 bolt main?

This page will tell you everything there is to know about the LT4. Most people will tell you it is not worth the money as there is much better valvetrain technology available for the same (if not less) cost.

The only way to tell if you have a four bolt main is to take off the oil pan. There is no block code or designation.

Additionally, LT4 crate engines, Corvette LT1 blocks, and replacement LT1 (non-production) blocks received 4-bolt blocks. Engines installed during production of the vehicles all got 2-bolts.

The stock 2-bolt block is plenty strong for most whatever you like to do, so that shouldn't dictate a build direction.

Yeah, it makes sense, its just that when I think of rebuilding the lt1, I'm prolly gonna put a roller cam and rockers and maybe port the heads and thats pretty much the lt4. just out of curiosity, the 94 is a obd I and the 95 is a obd II right? would it be possible/worthwhile to switch out computers?

95s were still OBDI, but they use an OBDII-style ALDL connector under the dash (commonly called OBD1.5).

All LT1s used roller cams BTW. LT4 components (specifically heads and intake) are expensive and rare anymore, so getting hell-bent on the term "LT4" won't do you much good.

Most of that's right xcept for the OBD1.5 part. OBD1.5 refers to Corvette models where they put extra O2 sensors in after the cat. 95 F-bodies are OBD1 with a OBD2 ALDL. They are not OBD1.5 .

My bad. I've always heard that it's the name given to the connector on a 95. I guess that's what you get when a term is just adopted by enthusiasts and there's no "official" definition.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme.....

cool man thanks, good info. I'm just trying to get a direction for my project. I bought the car with a rod knock so i'm gonna end up rebuilding/repalcing the motor, I just don't wanna put it together stock. would it be worth it to get a motor/harness from a 96+?

You have more tuning options in going with a 94 or 95 PCM (OBDI).
