Which V6 for 1996 RS Camaro?
Hello ~
My 1996 RS Camaro's got a knock (at idle) - metal particles in oil, from overheating badly. (nightmare began with leaky water pump, even though I knew better- long story). I've managed to keep it running for the past 4 months thanks to Prolong, Lucas oil stabilizer, and Synthetic oil. Still runs great otherwise.
I've seen some pretty good deals on used engines, and thinking this might be the way to go. (can't afford a ton of cash right now).
Does anyone know which year range engines will work with the RS? It's the 3.8L "vin K" with auto trans. Also what about Pontiac/Buick 3800 ll models? (assuming I swap the intake).
Thanks
Kirk

years 95 and up got the 3.8L V6 FYI
Im going to be dropping a LT1 with T56 in April but my motor i have now can use a new home... its a 3.8 V6 with 5 speed, it has around 105k on it tho.... just did the lower and upper intake gaskets, new plugs and wires, new IAC, just did a radiator flush,... runs perfect halls *** too,... just did all that this week end,... no knocking no leaking, just needs to have the power steering pump seals replaced but doing that next week end. so if your interested let me know.

Well a little more research and it looks like the engine from a 95-98 camaro/firebird is the only one that is an identical match, however supposedly a 99-02 longblock without the intake would work.
Too bad because there are a ton of low mileage buick's (sideways mounted) for descent prices up on ebay.. I suppose there are various bolt hole changes, etc that make that interchange impossible..
