Question about removing cat

I have a '95 T/A, and am considering removing the cat. I've heard different opinions on it. I had one shop tell me to go ahead, while another shop told me it will mess with the computer because its OBD1.

Thoughts? Tips? HELP?!

Ditch it.. You'd set off a check engine light from the rear o2 sensor on a obd2 car, but your obd1 car doesn't even got one of those.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Any advice on performance gains/losses? Is it worth spending the money to have a muffler shop chop the damn thing out?

When they take it out replace it with a cutout. The labor should be the same.

Wait, I'm not actually sure where the cat is on a 95.

On a 95 there aren't rear O2 sensors and it's single cat unless it's a california car. You shouldn't have any problems after removal. Lots of people remove the cat especially when doing headers.

Be aware that you are breaking a federal law by removing the cat... And unless the cat is bad/clogged, you won't see any change in performance.

Good luck finding an exhaust shop that will remove or alter a cat. convertor. I don't know of any that would be willing to pay huge Federal fines or go to jail for it...

I'm not in the US. I'm up in Canada. Don't know what the law is on it here, but I know when I took my Fiero in to have the cat removed, they didn't even blink an eye.

alternatively, you could just visit the local cholo shop and they'll pull the cat off and weld on a test pipe for around $30.. they don't care about the law, they're typically illegal immigrants anyway and long as you ain't askin for a receipt its all good, lol.

it doesn't matter what you tell the shop, it is illegal for them to have a car on the lift without a cat on it.

working on the car is not the same as working on the exhaust.

Guys wont you lose alot of low end torque by removing the cat and or mufflers..?? I had a couple Ford V8's (i know i know i'll shut it lol) and i've always lost a ton of low end torque, but gained high end HP. It almost felt as if i lost 20lb-ft torque yet gained 20HP if that makes sense. Backpressure..??

how are you missing the point?

an exhaust shop CAN NOT do any kind of EXHAUST work on any car that does not have a cat. PERIOD

the EPA guys in my town went off the wall giving all the local shops that used to do that kinda work for us fines. my friend went to go have a cat INSTALLED and the shop owner told us he couldn't TOUCH the car. if the EPA sees that up on the rack its a $12,000 fine. If you don't have a cool shop that will do that kinda **** for you, you better learn how to weld.

I just had this done last Thursday. Took it to one of my friends dad's who has his own lift. Raised it up, cut it off, welded in straight pipe, lowered it back down, handed him $40 bucks. Drove off.

Side notes: Yes it is illegal for a shop to do. I called around to a few places and no one would do it. $10,000 fine here in TN.

Car is a bit louder/clearer/raspier. Car drives pretty much the same, may'be a bit better in the mid-upper rpms.

That's really weird. It doesn't make sense why they would be mad over installing a cat. You think they would be extremely happy with that.

First you said it was illegal for them to put a car without a cat on a lift, then you said it's only illegal if they are working on the exhaust? I'm kind of confused.

I bought my car with no cats, the guy had it done in a shop outside of the emissions area. So I don't think the law is for every single part of the country.
