Head Gasket Up/Top Not Labeled.. What Way Up? Vicrot Reinz 5890 .026"

Just took them out of the freezer and ready to install the heads.. but the gaskets are not labeled wich way goes up and wich way goes down. my How to rebuild Lt1/4 book says they go a certin way. it says they will be labeled, but these are not labeled at all. looking at the holes it look semitrical so that does not tell me.. The gasket had little dimples in on one side, and out on the other..

Thanks

Not sure on yours, but most have markings/numbers/letters that are on the topside. Those gaskets were probably made at the Dana plant in Robinson, IL.

mine have a number on them.. but I think they go down.. I looked closey at the picture from ther book and if my gasket is the same as theirs then the side that you can see everythign outlined in (raised a tiny bit) would go up.. but If I do that, the numbers will be down..

How can they not mark it?????. makes no sence..

Well, the last time I looked the block is iron and the heads are alum. The correct gasket material is designed with these metals characteristics in mind. Reversing them is not optimal; but a big deal? I am unsure. Some guys run impy LT1 gaskets satisfactory.

Just got off the phone with Vicror Reinz. They said that you cant mess it up. there is no up and down on them, if there was it would be clearly labeled. Like I said earlier its symmetrical, and he said its all the same material on both sides (some fancy word for the technology they used)..

so. I guess that settles that.. not really the answer I would feel better with a straight answer since the heads and block are made of diffrent material.. but atleast I dont have to buy new gaskets now!

Well, I am sure you are relieved with that good news. Some gaskets have a top and bottom and must be installed correctly. I am glad you got accurate info from contacting Victor Reinz.
