Im doing my break in right now with some standard 10w30 mineral oil.

Just wanted to know after how many miles can i switch to synthetic one?

For a new engine? You want to run regular oil for at least 1500 miles to give the piston rings plenty of time to properly seat with the cylinder walls.

 

I put about 1k on mine before switching to synthetic. I gave the car a hard break-in.

Brake fluid is mineral oil. I think he means conventional oil.

So, you're not supposed to break in a new engine on synthetic oil? If not, why?

 

Most likely because it is too slick. A new engine, especially the compression rings need to marry the cylinders in order to get a good seal. Apparently, if the lube is too slick this may impair the ability for this marriage to be consumated. End result----YOU may wind up being consumated.

Some things are just accepted as comon sense derived from experience or trial. Corvettes, SS Cams, et al come from the factories with synthetics and usually have a tag under the hood recommending that you use synthetics.

Choice is yours---to syn or not to syn. Personally, I have no problem running non-synthetics for the life of the engine. although synthetics are supposed to last longer because they don't break down as rapidly as do non-syns, they still get contaminated and need to be changed on a regular basis. JMHO

 

I went 4000 miles with conventional. Could have gone lower. Just synthetic expensive.

 

Hog Wash. GM put Mobil 1 in the new 'vette when it leaves the factory. Don't "think" too hard on this one.....it's not worth the effort.

I flush it after :
50miles then
100miles then
250miles.

Now im finishing the break in,like i will run it...HARD!!!

So 2k miles should be plenty enough or should i go like 4-5k?

 

I think this is a myth. I just switched after the first scheduled oil change. As mentioned, there are several high performance engines that come with synthetic oil.

 

Thinking or believing are not the same as knowing without a doubt.

E.g. I believe that using dino oil works. Why? Because it has been used like forever. Is synthetic better in the long run? Short run? Break-in period? From the get go? Opinions vary.

My 97SS came with Quaker State Synthetics. Later Camaros came with Mobil 1. I suspect that whichever vendor provides the better deal will get their product recommended for the engine.

I declare that I do not know anything about which is best, but when I had my engine rebuilt, it was recommended to at least use dino oil to begin with. Since I have confidence in dino oil, I feel better about using it than believing all the hype about synthetics being that much better.

If they are better, then I would expect more power, better fuel efficiency, longer engine life, etc. But since I have seen nothing to convince me that spending considerably more on oil changes is going to provide all those benefits, then I will probably continue to use a good quality dino oil along with a quality filter, changing both as needed. JMHO

Im a fan of the break-in like you stole it concept. Mostly because I lack the self-control to put 1500 miles on anything before pounding on it.

The drive-it-like-you-stole-it break in gives me an excuse to abuse on the thing ASAP. And FWIW, I had a 125cc dirt bike, that idled for around 30 minutes, and was babied for a while. When it was time for a rebuild, the piston looked way dirtier below the ring, than the next time I rebuilt it where I pretty much loaded the rings like the method you posted.
