Huge oil leak over night, possibly a bad oil pressure sensor?

I went into my garage this morning and saw this huge splatter of oil under my car, maybe a 1/2 quart spread out? This has never happened before last night. I backed the car out so I could clean the oil. Jacked up the car and the oil was everywhere underneath the car. From the oil pan back. The front was clean. And so was the top of the motor to the bottom from what I could tell.

I took a rag and cleaned as much as I could. I started the car up and let it run for 10-15 minutes while I just scanned everywhere to see a leak. Didn't see one and not a single drop fell. But I saw that the oil pan sensor was pretty wet and drippy. So I tried tightening and it didn't budge. I tighted the oil filter as well. Turned the car off and put the car down. I'm going for a drive to get some oil but first let it sit in a nearby parking spot to see if maybe the driving rpms will help the leak start up again. I'm at a loss.

Can a leaky oil pan sensor cause so much oil to splash everywhere like my description? I mean it was everywhere. I didn't run over anything nothing was ripped or damaged. That's the only thing I could think of.

Help.

**edit, I mean the oil pan sensor **

could be the low oil level sensor which is srewed into the oil pan in front of the oil filter above oil drain plug.

Did you fill the car back up with oil before you tested it? Also if you had the car jacked up it might not do it with the oil at a different angle. I would try to replicate the exact conditions and see exactly where its coming from. Thats a lot of oil to loose after you parked it. My oil plug was half way out and i caught it just in time and it made a nice size puddle.

If there was indeed 1/2 quart on your floor, I would have trouble believing that much dripped off the engine due to an intake leak.

Well I doubt it's the oil level sensor. But I did take a drive and sure enough there was another puddle. Not as much as this mornings. Ill wait till tomorrow to check behind the intake for oil. How can I check if it's the rear seal? Is there a visual check? Can I take off that torque converter guard and see or do I have to remove the tranny to check?

Also, I forgot to mention there is a miss up top like a dead spot and then it's fine. It did it last night before the leak started and today when I did a quick WOT run to see if the motor was still healthy feeling.

Does that indicate a oil leak in the intake?

Did you check the oil pressure sensor or just the oil level sensor? You mention the pressure sensor in the first post only. If it is the pressure sensor, turn the car on and put your hand under it, you'll know if it is leaking. Mine filled up my hand on the spot when the pressure sensor went out.

I know the oil pressure sensor is towards the back of the intake manifold and when I reached back there it was wet. But I'm not sure of the exact location of the sensor. Anyone of a pic of where it is?

Here's another question if it is the rear main seal wouldn't it leak like crazy regardless of how I drive it? I drove it easy one time after the monster leak and there was just a little puddle. The next time I drove it with a nice WOT run, the puddle was much larger.

How can I tell if it is one or the other or the intake gasket?

Had a very similar problem oil was splattered all underneath my car from the pan back. Cleaned everything up couldn't get it to leak anything took it on the highway and it started to smell like burning oil. It turned out to be the oil filter, it was leaking horribly and splattering all over my y-pipe. I would check that first it the easiest thing.

I'll check into that.

I have another question. If it was the intake manifold leaking, wouldn't the top of the bell housing be all wet with oil too? Because mine is dry.

When mine leaked,It ran down the side to the oil filter area and trans. It was leaking right by the sensor. That is the thinest place between the block and intake.I resealed the sensor. It still leaked.I jacked the car up and let it run,it didnt leak.Once it was on the ground it would leak.Especially when you shut it off.It made me crazy .Finally I resealed the intake. No more leak.: )That was my experience.I am betting that is your problem.

Check out www.shbox.com for pics of various component locations. That site is a great resource.

Perhaps you have a combination of leaks, which could account for the large amount of oil in your garage.

Well, I removed the plate that protects the torque converter to see all sorts of oil. It was dry. The flexplate was dry not a trace of oil. And behind the flexplate was dry as well. Can I now check the rear main seal off my list?

So Joess97, your bell housing was dry too? It just seeped down the sides on yours correct? I'm going to go and by the intake gasket tomorrow. When I remove it, will I be able to tell that the gasket was bad or not?
