Unknown substance in oil-exhaust smells like gas

Hello. My car's exhaust smells like gas. I can smell this inside the vehicle and outside as well. When I opened my oil filler cap today I noticed that there was a yellowish substance coated on the inside of the oil filler cap neck. The substance had the consistency of soft butter and smelled like gas. I would like to know what this could be and how to fix both problems and whether they are related or not. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't really tell from the pic but the majority of the gunk is in my filler elbow. I'll take a pic tomorrow if needed and post it.

I've had the same foreign substance, but did not find any reason to be alarmed. It is most likely a combination of gas and condisation. As for smelling gas in the exhaust, that's a different story. That could be unburned fuel possibly.

I bet your mileage is down if you can smell the gas in the exhaust. You're probably running pig rich.

Yeah, I noticed that I went from about 16-17 mpg city to about 13-14 city. I have been running without 02 sensors as the ones I bought (Bosch) were giving me more problems than I have now. When I had the Bosch ones installed, there was literally black smoke coming out of my exhaust. I also noticed that my exhaust was spitting some sort of wet black sooty substance. When I took the 02 sensors off, that problem went away but I still smell gas and my mpg is down. What is the best way to solve this problem. Should I buy a different set of 02 sensors (OEM)? Thanks again.

Any idea why my vehicle ran more rich with the Bosch sensors than running without sensors? Does running without 02 sensors cause that gas smell?

if you run without o2 sensors you car will run in open loop casing it to run rich. you need to pu in your o2 sensors, bosch or delco, and then try and pinpoint your rich condition from there.

This thread has me cracking up ...... You're posting asking why you are smelling gas, and you don't have your O2 sensors installed?!?!?!

Buy the AC Delco sensors; the Bosch ones are known to have issues (try a search for Bosch O2 and you'll see)

Thomas.

hahaha yeah i agree

seriously to the OP buy a set of either ACDelco or Delphi Oxygen sensors install them in your car, change your oil asap and then get back to us

oxygen sensors are vital to proper engine operation and gas milage, from my experiences bosch sensors, atleast in my car dont work worth a crap
