Looking for a mild cam, nothing big
Looking for a mild cam, nothing big
I'd like to give it a shot. I'm thinking about installing a cam in my 1997 SS. I've seen people go with a bunch of diff cams and i'm not sure where i should start, I dont want to spend a bunch of money replacing heads or anything like that, maybe the rockers but thats it, unless i need taller valve covers.
I want something semi-agressive, more than the LT4.
I've got just some basic bolt ons. 6 speed, spec stage 3 clutch, pro 5.0 shifter, ram air, longtubes, no emissions, no egr or air or cats. wide open exhaust, OBD1 conversion, 160 thermostat.... nothing big, just want a little more power and mostly, the sound of a cam.
would the cc306 be alright, or is it too big? i dont want a lot more lift, if i do keep my stock valve covers.
I dont know a bunch about cams, so i though i'd ask the experts. what "off the shelf" cam should i look into?
thanks in advance, i know this question is asked a lot, sorry.
ps. i drove a 99 WS6 today that had just about all the bolt ons i have and same exact setup, and his cam was a little aggresive, it was a Comp Cam 224/230 581/592 114LSA
would the cc306 be a little more mild or not?

u mean cc 305?
i noticed they make both 305 and 503, wouldnt the 503 be more agresive?
CCA-07-503 --- 224@ .503/ 230@ .510 (1.5RR)--- 112 LSA --- 1800-5800
CCA-07-305 --- 220@ .510/ 230@ .510 (1.5RR)--- 114 LSA --- 1500-5500
maybe just a little more? im not sure what all the numbers mean. would i be alright running the 503 with stock heads? and with 1.6 rr's under the stock covers?

I run a CC305 cam. Great cam for daily driving. Slight lope if you listen, but not enough to turn heads of people wondering WTF is that?
AWESOME torque, but falls off at the top end. I spend 95% of my time driving in traffic and rarely get over 4500rpm, so for me it works perfect.
This winter I am cracking the engine open and porting the heads up a bit. I'll probably go with something a bit more aggressive, just haven't decided what. 503 and the 306 are on my list though.

i have an emmisson legal LE1 cam that i just took out of my car, it has only 7000 miles on it i will let it go for $150 plus shipping. the reason i took it out is cause i am going with the LE4 cam.lloyd's custom ground cams sell for $350, so this is a great deal and it won't last long.

I guess no one likes reading his first post. If you think your friends 224/230 on a 114 is too agressive, your going to want a cam with less overlap. The cc306 will kill your lowend torque and have alot more cam surge than a 224/230 on a 114.
Oh and springs would be needed with whatever cam.
I want it to be noticable to people around it. The TA i drove with the cam wasnt bad, i just wasnt use to it, when he drove me around in it, it really pulled hard the higher the rpms went.
I dont drive my car that much, def not a daily driver. and not too many stop and go lights around here, mostly freeway type driving.
I could go for something like the cam in the TA i drove, i want to be able to hear the cam, and feel it.
My car has no emissions what so ever. so an emissions cam would do me no good. thanks

Either the LPE 211/219 .533/.560 on a 112 or the 219/219 .560/.560 also on a 112 both with 1.6s...You'll love either and be very happy...These motors love the smaller duration higher lift cams...The LS1 series is a whole different animal...

I've looked at this alot and am going to go with the GM 845 cam. It will wake the car up without sacrificing driveability. You'll keep the low end TQ and extend the high end HP without having to rev to the moon to get into the power band.
The part number is 12370845
214 intake duration 224 exhaust duration 0.521" intake lift, and 0.543" exhaust lift with 1.6 ratio roller rockers
Other ones to look at are the LPE 211/219 mentioned above and the Crane 227. I think you'll be the most happy with the GM 845 though.
