Port mold pics inside for TEA CNC and Trick Flow LT1 heads

OK, here are a couple of port molds I made recently. One is off of a fresh set of Trick Flow LT1 heads in untouched as cast condition. The other mold is from a set of TEA stage II CNC ported stock LT1 heads. Port volume on the Trick Flow intake is said to be 195cc's, I measured the intake on the TEA head at close to 190cc's.

Pretty interesting to get a inside out look at a top shelf ported stock head beside a aftermarket casting. I haven't taken any detailed cross section measurements but rough measurement shows the pushrod area to be roughly equal and the TEA head to have a little more area over the apex of the short side radius. The roof of the port and bowl are a smoother arc on the TEA head and it looks like the floor on the TEA is flatter. I'll add some more views later.

I should have flow bench numbers up on the stock Trick Flow ports and also another set of the Trick Flow ports with some minor tweaks like trimming the valve guide down and blending the valve job and seat insert in. May be able to swing numbers for the TEA heads off the same bench too.

Yeah, I know the inside of the exhaust ports looks like a monkey's *** sewn up with a grapevine I spread 3 layers of black RTV silicone letting each one dry before the next. Ugly but effective.

Later, Michael

That is awesome dude. Really gives you an idea on port shape!

One thing I notice is how the trickflows bowl is much straighter going to the valve, looks like it would help out airflow accros the valve much better, but on a stock casting you ar limited.

Yeah, there's nothing like a mold to let you see how things are shaped. Looking into the heads I wouldn't have guessed there was that much difference between them. The bowl in the Trick Flow head is definitely a lot deeper and has a sharper turn coming off the roof. From other molds I've seen I'd say this may be more like an optimum port form than the CNC ported stockers. You definitely only have so much room to deepen the bowl on the stock head before you hit water

I haven't seen anyone post up numbers on a set of Trick Flows with a quick and dirty port clean up ( mainly trimming the valve guide and boss down and blending the valve seat insert in). The as cast ports actually look quite good with a smooth finish and pretty good match to the valve seat inserts. I'm really curious to see what they flow when you do some very basic mods, the kind just about anyone could do without worrying about screwing them up. Nothing fancy and very little material removed.

It took 20 minutes with a carbide burr to shape up a pair of intake and exhaust ports around the guides and rough blend the seat insert. Probably another 20 minutes per pair of ports to smooth everything out with a sanding roll. If they pick up 10 or 15 cfm with a minimal increase in port volume it would be well worth the effort. That's about what I expect but who knows? Trick Flow numbers claim they flow about 255cfm at .5" and .6" lift stations. It would be nice if a half a day tweaking them bumps them up to 265 or 270cfm.

I want to bring this back up and see if you ever got any numbers for the flow of the TEAs vs the trickflows

In a case like this it helps to maybe click on the poster's profile and see when they were last active. In this case 10-27-09, based on that it is unlikely he will reply.
