Why do you need to change the timing cover?

Why do you need to change the timing cover if you have a 93/94 LT1 to run a Cloyes double roller timing chain. I know you do, I just don't know why. Is there any modifications that can be made to the old style one? Thanks for any help.

because the 93/94 opti is driven from a spline in the cam gear. The Cloyes DR does not have this spline in it. You have to turn your opti from the cam dowl pin. This forces you to run a vented opti and newer style cover.

there are no mods you can do to the cover to make it work. if you are not using an opti anymore then you can probably still use the original cover.

I could get away without the opti if Delteq ever came out with their stage 2 kit that does away with the optical sensor. Do you know if that ever came out? Also, I see you're in New Jersey too, do you know anywhere around here that I can pick up a newer timing cover and opti? Thanks.

locally? no. Your best place to find it local would be a junk yard. Another great place to look is the for sale section of this board... you can find just about anything you need there

the problem with the ignition is that you neeed a cam signal to operate it. You ditch the opti and you loose your signal and have to run something aftermarket and get a crank position signal. do some searching on it you will find it has been discussed a lot here. Its not impossible by any means though.
Where are you in NJ?

hehe, fair is what ever you are willing to pay my friend

but seriously you can probably pick one up here for $40. You can try contempoary corvette in Bristol, they may have one laying around. They have alot of F-body and vette parts. But they mostly only sell complete motors and wrecks for rebuild. Other than that I would think you just need to go fishing in junk yards around here.

I see your pretty new here, welcome to the board. Come join all the rest of the locals in the North Eastern section. Where are you in NJ?
