Should I switch from a 230/236 to a GM 847

Would it be worth it for me to switch from a XE 230-236 cam to a GM 847. Car is a 355 LT1 with 1200 miles on it with stock ported heads, by a local porter. I have a 3200 vigilante converter and 3.73 gears in a 9 bolt rear. Car also has shorty SLP headers and will have nitrous in the very near future. Car makes good power (will dyno in a few weeks) and drives very nicely with a mail order tune. I already have good enough springs, lifters, pushrods, and rockers so that is not an issue. What I am looking for is will I make a great deal more power with the 847 and not lose drivability? What would you do?

I would say it all depends on your port job on the heads...the 847 might have a different power band than your 230 236, but from what I hear the 847 isn't far from that at all. So whats the point? I guess is my opinion.

I would just get a custom cam for your application. Probably make you the most power.

I ran a 230/236 for a month or so before I spun a bearing and IMO its a nice cam. The power curve is so smooth and pulls really good in the mid to high RPM. IMO id stay with it becuase you dont have to rev it to the moon to make power like you'd have to with the GM847. street_warrior96 I believe put down almost 400 RWHP with that cam and a set of ported stockers, if you plan to swap cams just go custom grind. i wouldnt tear apart the current setup to go off-the-shelf again. just my .02, but good luck on what you decide on!

If your running 230/236 I take it you don't have to worry about emissions. If that's the case, why not spend the money on a set of long tubes? And if you like the way it drives now, just let it be. Add the nitrous and then worry about any future changes. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I went from an XE 230/236 112 and went to an LE2 cam which is very close to a GM847 and picked up a good amount of hp. Mind you I also had him do my heads again. The heads and cam together netted me 30 rwhp over my old home ported heads and cam setup.

Personally, I would use the money towards another mod.

Guess I never really thought of switching to long tubes. When I did the swap 5 years ago no one ran them, so that is definately something to look at.

Otherwise thanks for all the replies and from the way it looks I would be better to stick to the 230-236.

Thumbs up

Rickyz28, do let me know what your dyno numbers look like in the next couple of weeks. My set up, (See Sig), is very similar to yours. Do you have any 1/4 mile times for your car?

That 230/236 needs a good flowing exhaust system. I bet those Shorties are killing you. The 230/236 is a great cam big power with good street manners. Look at some Jet hots, Kooks, or Pacefarters. What kind of exahust you running?

13.2 @102 was the cars best time so far. Car is heavy, speaker box, me and full interior, some sound deadner. I am going to be getting it out next week to dyno it with and without the nitrous. The car pulls hard and I picked up 2 tenths by opening the cutout. As for exhaust I have a 3" dynomax intermediate pipe with a flowmaster 80 series (I hate the sound).

The problem with exhaust is that I can not run some of the headers the 4th gen guys are using because they will not clear the frame in my 3rd gen.

here are the 2 slips I have:
60' 1.911
1/8 8.449
14 13.20 @ 102.72

60' 1.886
1/8 8.458
1/4 13.307 @ 101.6

Overall I feel the car should be running a good deal faster and I will weigh it to see what it weighs and I am sure that has an effect also.

I'd definantly dump the 80 series. What short tubes are you running?
