Question EGR or o2

I was wondering what are the symptoms of the EGR or O2's going out? My car has really bad exshaust fumes pooring in it all the time and was wondering if one of thease could be the problem I smell gas alot also.

If the fumes smell strong, you might have an 02 problem. Leak could be coming from anywhere including egr. Let your engine cool, start yor car, and feel for exhaust leaks by the egr, and headers.

Could be one of many things... you say you smell gas a lot? is it stronger than a car with open headers? what year/mods do you have on your car? You may wish to add a signature with basic info, as it is useful in answering some questions.

The year of your car would help a great deal. The 96-97 LT1s with the OBDII diagnostics are more advanced then the preceding OBDI style and will generate a code for several different problems of the 02 and EGR systems. If you smell alot of gas, I would start to think you are running rich which in that case the 02 sensors could be at fault, but there are also many other issues that can cause a rich condition.

The O2 seems more likely. My EGR has gone out before, and it did not make any problems at all. Only reason I knew is from a code that would not even turn the SES light on. If you can get a scanner to read what the O2's are seeing, it should cross the .450 mark constantly, both up and down. If it stays in a certain range, or does not change at all then you know one is bad.
