Back fired out the intake and won't start...

Geez, I can't believe I'm posting one of these threads, but here it goes... I just put the timing set, timing cover, and opti on. I decided to fire it up to make sure it would start and run. It started right up and idled perfectly. I walked up to the front of the car and popped the throttle a couple times. Everytime I did, something would hit me in the face. Well, it turns out that one of the drop lights I was using burned a hole in one of the fuel lines. So, I cut the bad section out and went and bought a slightly bigger flexable fuel line. I put the two ends in and hose clamped it (gently). I went to fire it back up again and it back fired through the intake and now it won't start. It doesn't even act like it wants to fire. I checked the fuel pressure (to make sure I wasn't pinching the line), and it's 42 psi with KOEO and ~38 psi while it's cranking (not leaking out of the patch what so ever). So, I ruled the fuel out. I then thought it maybe jumped time, but it wasn't acting like it (hard to turn over). Well, the dots lined up perfectly. I even took the opti back apart and it seems fine. I haven't verified that I have spark yet, but what could cause it to do something like this? Any help is appreciated. I'm going to bed; I'm tired.

Check your MAF sensor, the backfire might of damaged it.

After messing with the Fuel lines did you happen to mess with the Plug Wires. Last week I got my Delteq coil packs on the wrong spot and had a backfire through the intake b/c my valve events were all messed up . Fixed the problem after I fixed the coil packs

I run a speed density tune (no MAF). I didn't even have anything attached to the throttle body. I appreciate the reply though.

No, that's what's weird; I didn't touch anything except for splicing the line back together. Perfectly smooth idle to nothing at all.

Oh, well in that case, you think theres a chance the MAP sensor got damaged?

9 times out of ten if you have a backfire its because of a misrouted plug wire or wrong timing.

I'll hook my laptop up to the car when I get a chance, which will probably be after Thanksgiving weekend.

That's what I was thinking, but I verified that both the plug wires and timing were in check. I'm at a loss. I won't get a chance to do anthing more to it until after Thanksgiving weekend. I'll revive the thread and let you guys know what I've done/tried. Any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

You put together an opti out of parts from two of 'em right? Maybe there were more bad parts to those optis than you knew about.

I thought about that. I'm going to return them to their original form. One was brand new and the other had like 131,xxx on it. The brand new one was the one that was rubbing. I now know why it did that. I, being inexperienced, figured out a way to install the opti wrong and the dowel wasn't in the hole. I think that's why it rubbed and why the back of my timing gear was all marred up. I thought the new opti's shaft was bent (which it isn't, I'm just an idiot ), so I used the old one. I'll check that when I get the chance.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a fubar'd combo of opti.

When my opti blew I had a huge backfire flame come out of my cutout. I was in the burnout box at the track at top of 2nd gear Shoulda been there

Always check the ignition fuse, #5 I think, in the underhood fuse block. These blow easily and the car does everything right except fire up.

First place to always look for oddities is the fuses, those bastards can cause alot of headaches.

Didn't think about that, I had my opti on wrong for a few hundred miles when I thought I needed to use the opti mounting bolts to "pull" the opti the rest of the way on making it flush with the timing cover mounting holes...that could have caused the slight wear on my cam retainer also since the opti was pushing the sprocket into the retainer that way.

FYI, anyone, GM opti's from Jason Cromer run you $243 shipped to your door, can't beat that price and I'm not convinced the MSD optis are any better talking to a few local folks that work on LT1s alot, they haven't had but about 50% success with them.

I think if I was going to get any other opti than a stocker I'd go with a dynaspark. Expensive, but the big boys that run 'em seem to do OK.. I believe Abare runs one of 'em.
