I Need Help 355, 383, 396.....

I am planning a budget of about $5000 and i am looking for a mid-range to top end power car. i have been thinking over and over again whther to just do a 355 with big heads and cam, or 383 and or 396!!!! I friggin cant decide I was planning on doing either a set of LE3 heads or AI's 200 CC heads.... thats the least of my desicions. my builder recommends a 383 due less problems with a build over 396. I am also planning a small shot of NOS just for a little extra kick. I really want over 450 HP/Torque car N/A. Any input would be appreciated....

for $3500 to $4000 those heads and cam will do it for you on any cubic inch LT1, (350, 355, 357, 383, 396). That's the cost of the heads/cam and all the supporting parts like rockers, pushrods, lifters, ported intake.....

How much is left of your budget then for a short block?

$5k for your whole build?

There is no way in hell you can do a nice 396 for $5k. Topend will take most of that budget as is.

If I misunderstood this question sorry.

Tony.

5 grand is not enough unless you do all the work and get great deals on every thing(that wont happen) go with head and cam work

well i am talking 3k to 5k for the short block and whatver everything else cost is what it costs cant change that. i have a current heads and cam set up and i am putting out some good numbers (440 HP). my thing is that all these new car are coming out with blowers, and turbos and more CI's. dont want to fall behind or be left behind by a damn 4 banger or blown 32v piece of crap motor. all the assembling and installation i can do... i just basically need the short block. MY QUESTION IS THAT I HAVE RUN ACCROSS MANY CARS WITH 383 THAT ONLY RUN AROUND 450 HP. I WOULD LIKE A 10 SEC CAR BUT DONT KNOW IF A 383 WILL GET ME THERE. I KNOW A 396 WILL BUT DONT KNOW IF ANYONE HAS EVER DONE THAT ON THIS HEAD COMBO WITH A HYRALIC ROLLER CAM OVER A SOLID ROLLER. WHAT I WOULD REALLY LIKE IS A 396 OR 383 ON A SOLID ROLLER SET UP BUT DONT KNOW IF THAT IS WORTH THE BUILD ON STOCK PORTED HEADS. WHAT IS NEEDED FOR A GOOD SOLID ROLLER SET UP?

a 383 and a blower will put you well over the top(im hopeing for 650-700rwhp). thats what i plan on doing. i almost have the 383 done. then i have to do the rear end and tranny upgrade. then my blow job. just keep the cr low.

after doing some more searches i have decided to go with 383 due to less headache like clearance issues and money costs. just want to know if anyone know if a 383 solid roller set up on stock heads ported what is needed for a good stable valvetrain... do i need shaft mount rockers or can i use regular roller rockers with a stud girdle?anyone know here i can get a set of shaft mounted rocker arm for a stock lt1 head?

There are people running solid roller setups w/ over 500lbs open pressure using 7/16 studs/guideplates.

SR isnt know as to "Streetable" either. You have to adjust stuff at least every 15 track passes or look at it. And on the street I would say 300-400 miles. HR can get you were you want to go easy.

I think a small SR is great. I have been street driving it for a little bit now, I don't realy know how you came up with the adjustment intervals, but they are way off and misleading. Please, for the good of the comunity and for the guy you are trying to help, don't give advice on things you don't know.
Seriously, do you want a hot rod or a winter car your grandmother can drive in the snow to church? Hell, even she might like the rum-pum-pum--pum of a decent cam. It was 30 degrees last night, and guess who's car cold started like a new toyota, and drove a mix of city and highway all night? I think if I had snow tires and a desire to drive it in the salt, I easily could.

Lastly, can you tell us what your idea of streetable is?
I was told that the Street Twin was "unstreetable"
I was told the SR was "unstreetable"
I was told the BMR track pack was "unstreetable"
I was told a 4:56 gear was "unstreetable"

I think most people don't know what they want. They look at message boards and get an idea built up in their head (mostly from reading misinformation). Usualy the reality of the car is more than a little different from what they thought. I am glad I listened to professionals. My SS is a dream cruzer that will haze em' from a 60 roll.
