Getting ready to have the heads ported and assembled, and figured I would upgrade now for when I'm taking it to 7000RPM.

What Comp beehive spring part # do I use for these heads?

 

#918 Beehives, LS1 spring locator, shimmed to 1.790-1.810" installed height

 

Why the LS1 locator and why not the Comp 4705-16? This is my standard
cut and paste on the beehives in LT1 heads:

7 degree hardware with 4705-16 spring seats (1.73" installed
height):

787-16 retainers
648-16 locks

10 degree hardware with 4705-16 spring seats:

795-16 steel retainers, or
794-16 titanium retainers
611-16 locks (standard), 1.70" installed height, or
614-16 locks (+.050), 1.75" installed height

For either installation you will need spring seats:

4705-16 spring seats, .062" thick

Are LT4 heads different in this regard?

 

If that part number works with LTx heads then great... I was doing these before comp had those availible and was told to go to GM for stock LS1 locators, so that is what I have been doing since then, I get better prices on GM parts than most due to our R&D projects with Flowmaster and GMPP.

 

Your installed heights are too tight though...

125-135# on the seat is all you need.

 

With my Beehive setup i was told to run 1.75-1.77 installed height. At least thats what Mr. Bauer says.

 

I was talking about the 1.730" number listed.

I don't have valve float issues at the pressures I run so I don't run them tighter. Sometimes 140# + on the seat will cause lifters to bleed down and customers hate that. There is not much pressure change in .020" so it's no big deal.

 

I'm glad I asked before buying anything. So, I can't use the locks and retainers that came with my AFR heads?

 

Why don't you get AFR 8015 springs (upgraded for high reving hydrolic cams) just exchange the springs.. AFR suggest that ..

145lbs close seat and there is no need to change your retainers,locks...

 

I just list them for reference. I mocked up all this stuff and that is what
I ended up with on a stock LT1 head. The way to go is with the +.050"
superlocks and the 1.75" height.

 

My valves are .050 longer than stock, so what locks should I use? 611 or 614?

 

Just add .050" to the listed dimensions and pick the installed height that
gives you the seat pressure you desire. The beehives are designed to be
installed at 1.80". I went with 1.75" because that's the most I could get
with the available parts.

If you go with the least expensive hardware, the 787-16 retainers and
648-16 locks, with your valves that's 1.78" installed height, assuming
you use .062" spring locators.

 

I will go with 10degree hardware.. 794-16 tit. ret. Here we can see what close pressure at what height. For ex: Your beehives have 146lbs close pressure at 1.750" height (2. page)

I want the benefits of the beehive springs (less needed seat pressure and reduced harmonics). If I am going to have the heads assembled, I only want to have to do it once..
