car flooded by katrina

katrina flooded my car and water went over the roof. me and family have almost got it running again. when i turn the key the engine turns and tries to crank ,but wont. I have found that when i spray throttle body cleaner or gas in the throttle body it will stay cranked until i stop spraying. also not sure if water is in tank should i drop the tank or could water even get in the tank.

Re: car flooded by katrina

only advice i can give is drain and replace ALL vital fluids, replace plugs and wires, and (never seen an optispark dont know if it applies) make sure cap and rotor are completaly dry.

Ooops! Wrong forum!

Did you get ALL the liquid out of the tank? If there was any left in the bottom of the tank- it was probably nearly all water. The water will settle on the bottom of the tank. If you left any "fuel" it was probably lined in water.

My opinion is to take the tank out and clean it completely. You already confirmed that you have a fuel problem. This seems like the next logical step.

I'd drop that transmission pan too as soon as you get it running. If water was over the roof- it got in your transmission. If only you could have drained the water out of the transmission before your pump pushed it through your converter... oops!

Good luck.

Hey man, my sincerest condolences. Be careful with the gas, it can look fine, smell fine, and still be laced with water. Water settles, so your tank will have some in the bottom, for sure. Your opticrap is probably toast, too. Sorry.

Re: car flooded by katrina

update!!!

heres whats on now.
did the whole fluids change and flush.
except for the gas.
engine still almost stays cranked but dies coil and wireing is fine.
disassembled the passenger side fuel injectors they were dirty than hell.
got that side cleaned but still arent sure if they are uncloged.engine still does the same.
but i am not sure if the pcm is telling the injectors to spray. whould damage to certain sensors cause a probelm in injection.
any help would be greatly appreciated. also please let me of anything ive done wrong so far.

To check if your injectors are working you can take a 195 light bulb (the small little ones with the two wires folded on the bottom of the bulb), and unfold the wires so it has 'leads'. Take off a connector for a fuel injector and stick the leads of the bulb in the connector and crank it over.. if the light flashes then the injectors are working. I ould strongl suggest getting all the water out of the tank first though.. thats probbaly your problem anyways. -Jeff

if u think u have water in the tank, get a thing of dry gas to add to the tank.

Re: car flooded by katrina

ya i dont wanna be a jerk but really i would have FIRST OFF before even thinking about asking for help, drained the tank and all fuel lines. Why even go through all the rest of that work first if theres a 90% chance its H2O in fuel. good thing to get all the liquid from the fuel lines (BE CAREFUL!!!!!) is a hairdryer and at least 1 end open. that'll speed it up so that u dont have to wait HOURS for every little nook and corner in the lines to dry

Re: car flooded by katrina

sorry i hadnt had a chance to update.

i dropped the tank and it looked fine but i cleaned and flushed it.
cleaned fuel lines.
replaced purge canister.
now i think it may be the ignition switch or the injectors or pressure regulator.

what it is doing now is cranking for 2 secs and dieing , but if have a friend spray throttle body cleaner or gas in the throttle body it will stay cranked until i run out of the fuild. which leads me to believe that its only getting fuel at first then not.

could a few clogged fuel injectors cause this?
also i heard the passlock feature could have something to do with it.
although my 94 formula had the same symptoms and it was the ignition switch.

any help would great. thanks

could be the fuel pump isn't building or holding enough pressure.

Re: car flooded by katrina

41-47 psi is the normal range with vacuum line to the regulator removed. It should be the same at WOT, but somewhat lower at idle (maybe 6-8 psi). A

Have you changed the fuel filter?
